Everytime I learn more about software I am more surprised that the entire world is not on fire, all the time.

So many things where you’re like “ok but surely there’s some guy whose job it is to…” and no there is no guy.

Here’s a tool that a handful of eccentrics maintain as a hobby. If it breaks, it costs hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of lives.

Oddly enough this model works better than paying people to do it... for what are, really, just overhead activities. Which says something profound and important about how we should approach about 60% of what computers do.

The disadvantage of this is that we will have five new unnecessary shells and a dozen new computer languages that are good for really specific use cases like running a homebrew kernel on your John Deere tractor but wait that will have surprising economic advantages.
