Ps3 actually *was* $1000 in Australia. We only got one because my grandfather died! (Don't worry, he was my Dad's abuser; it was a great Christmas all around for the fam)

At least the launch PS3 gave you a bang for your buck with it being able to play CDs, SuperCDs, DVDs, BluRays, PS1 games, and PS2 games. Not to mention that you could store MP3 and MP4 files along with save data from every PS platform at the time. And let’s not forget it having Linux out of the box!

The PS6 will basically be a $1.5k stream stick at best with the lack of physical media or ability to modify the software/hardware like PC on the market.

tbf the launch ps3 was backwards compatible with both ps1 and ps2 games, was a bluray, dvd and cd player all in one on top of playing games, had 2 extra usb ports and had every card reader known to man at the time under a flap, and a fully functional web browser, making it a multimedia powerhouse

the main value proposition at the time that made me consider it was that it could serve as a fully functional replacement for my aging media PC. Also like, people had a better standard of living back then so it was less of a stretch to drop the equivalent of 1k.

There is a big difference tho: back then, you could wait and get it at a lower price after some time. A year down the line you'd be able to get one for much cheaper. Now it's the opposite.

There’s a whole Bureau of Labor Statistics that believes this number, they made the calculator - take it up with them Intuitively, it makes perfect sense to me. 600 at the time did feel extremely similar to the way 1000 does now.

The rent has doubled, the house price in my neighbourhood went up 150% since then. Both are not in the inflation statistics, by design. There is a good reason people do not believe the official inflation figures Also the official inflation of basic necessities is much higher than the cumulative one.
