While I was away from bluesky I got married and while I don’t have fun wedding photos to share, I do have the story of our cross cultural rings 🥰 The rings are wavy zirconium with purple “amethyst” accents - the color can be changed in the future which is cool but we already picked the best color

why’d I say かっこいい like that? embarrassing

oh right it’s because the old lady who seated us complimented my Japanese pronunciation (to Mayu, not to me, so you know it was genuine 🤭) so I was kinda drunk on that and also a lot of high end sake

lightbulb moment: Japanese speakers end sentences in けど with the same energy and for the same purpose as millennials’ usage of lol

in Eldorado Gate’s translation I thought it might be fun to incorporate a bit of Latin American flavor via spell and item names and such, since the title somewhat implies more of a connection to that culture than the game actually has. it feels like a good way to use the Roman alphabet

I don’t wanna study for the JLPT!! I just want to finish this project! It’s so exciting that it’s real and the only thing stopping a release is me doing the translation work. mildly tempted to invite another translator on to lighten the load but idk. this is my baby at this point

I just hope i have at least one rpg friend that digs the game as much as i did and actually plays through the whole thing. just one of my JRPG buddies finding a new favorite facilitated by my translation. it’s such a charming game and i hope im keeping that intact

that Roman alphabet thing in the first post was kind of a half-thought. what i mean is since English shares an alphabet we can incorporate Spanish words more directly than katakana allows for. plus it keeps the ‘foreign’ nature of the term intact! original game uses English words, which directly

translated feel kinda uninspired to me. real rpg maker default hours to call your flame spell Fire and your water spell Ice. gonna do this with some of the gear names too i think but i dont wanna go overboard with it. also decided to make the narrator’s distinctive laugh “jajajajaja” 🤭

It helps that words like Fuego and Hielo end in a nice consonant-vowel combo that lets me keep the spell naming conventions mostly intact. Fuego, Fuegon, Fuegion etc. still gotta think of a good one for the wood attribute spells. if you know Spanish please suggest fun botany themed words

Intense JLPT study has made Japanese feel more like work lately But then I lay in bed at the end of the night and pull up some manga and just chill and read and frequently get absorbed enough to forget I’m reading a second language and it’s still fun and cool

I recently finished 白山と三田さん and now I’m reading GANTZ which is much dumber and less cute but also my favorite series tend to be very wordy so there’s some easy satisfaction to be found in an action manga like this
