I do think anyone who wants us to take Elizer Yudkowsky seriously as an authority on AI armageddon should be forced to testify on video that they have read the entirety of his 660,000 word rationalist Harry Potter fan fiction – written aged 30–34 – and still thinks the world needs his take.

As we seem to have to talk about the author of the awful Harry Potter fanfic & his works, consider this: The hallowed genius was so smart that he portrayed Hermione's UK family as super-wealthy with a huge house, b/c both of her parents were dentists That is his level of understanding of the world

I have read it! It’s not bad for a fanfic. And if you can’t base your new social order on somebody’s hobby writing riffs on other people’s original work for the entertainment of the kind of fans who put the “atic” in “fan,” what can you base it on? Social and political science, or something?

Worth noting that the fanfic is still ranked top 5 on fanfiction.net out of around 850k works, and that presumably happened before it moved to its own site. It's definitely not for everyone would but lots of people enjoyed it. Honestly, I think EY's takes have gone down hill since then

Agreed. Interviewed him for our BBC Radio 4 40 Years of The Terminator Doc to see whether it influenced current existential risk thinking. Was surprised when he denied he'd ever said we should be willing to bomb data centres. I read out the quotes from his Time Magazine open letter. Weird moment...

Maybe it was the fine line between 'we should be willing to do it', versus 'he said to do it' and/or the more extreme, 'he said to do it now'. I don't believe we framed it as either of the latter, but that's the only version that might have gotten pushback, imho.

There is an extract of the writing in this podcast segment, for those who want to hear my appalled cohost @lucyreade.bsky.social discover it in real time.

In this week's episode of Touching Grass I explain the connection between Aella – the sex blogger behind the infamous Sankey chart – and the latest global headlines about whether AI will kill us all. Because, oh boy, the connection is real.

Wait, he wrote what?! I met him in 2009(?) and was quite certain that while he had a point that oversight on some tech stuff was needed, he was not the right person to save humanity, despite his conviction he was perhaps the only one who could.

I already knew about Yarvin, the basilisk and their obsession with a certain Harlan Ellison story but had no idea about the sex stuff until yesterday. Don't know how I missed that but I lament my loss of innocence!

I was familiar with the rationalists and their doomsday cult but had no idea about the Harry Potter fanfic, the birthday gang bang or the Zizians until last night and I'm jealous of yesterday me. Such innocence!

I've done a very potted summary in this podcast segment bsky.app/profile/jame...

The problem with his story is less that it's Harry Potter and more that he made a lot of assumptions in it designed solely to let his self insert character be smug. "What if I change all of the rules of the universe and only my one character knows that they're different?"

He didn't fix it though. He just reversed plot elements so he could sneer at characters he didn't like. Wormtail was NOT an animagus so let's laugh at the Weasleys who thought he was! But the endless I know that you know that I know that... stuff got very old after a while.

Well and making Harry to be a super genius who reinvented magic because he believed in Yudkowsky's fringe scientific beliefs is also a bit much. There's just a "I am so much smarter - and therefore so much better - than anyone except for a few select friends" attitude throughout the work.

Something entertaining about those less online than me having to get their heads around LessWrong, SlateStarCodex etc. I bet RationalWiki is getting a traffic spike.

I remember there was a part where Harry was in a time loop (I think due to a challenge from Quirrel) where he sees himself from the outside and is like "damn. I think something might be wrong with me) and then I got bored.
