okay so I take weekly backups of the paper mario leaderboard via the src api. I'm no legal expert. does anyone know if the creative commons license still applies to data obtained prior to this change?

SRC changed their terms of use yesterday, and released a news post with an FAQ. They make it sound like not a big deal. It's a big deal. The Creative Commons licence is gone. They claim ownership over the data now. Thread about what this means, and what we can do about it 🧵

I've sent them an email with a few clarifying questions, including this one, because that's also what I'm curious about. I can get back to you on this once I get answers. Similar: if the data that was *submitted* during that period is under CC, not even obtained

Also no legal expert, but existing data should not be able to be placed under a more restrictive license without explicit mutual consent from all involved parties (in my mind and based on how OSS projects are run)

they are going to claim the api data is under the new restrictive license and that would prevent easy exporting to a new site.

They can claim whatever they want, but that's getting into territory of needing an actual lawyer to fight them on it. Data you already have shouldn't be able to be more restricted. Any new data acquired they might have an argument
