And then unwind all the studios that started releasing those games.

i think Xbox just now believes fully that their install base is just people who buy every call of duty lol. it feels like double fine is the only “unconventional” developer that’s putting out games on the platform and everything else is just appealing to 2010 trends.

They have absolutely been coasting on their “legacy” IP while seemingly having no idea of what direction to take it. No real innovation. You guys really like that first Halo, right? Well how about you play it again, but mechanically worse.

It is a shame. I want to be excited for XBOX but even now there are rumors of more shutdowns and layoffs.

It’s either that or Rare, since it seems they are kind of done with Sea of Thieves and the thing they had been working on for so long got cancelled recently

I’m just glad the new XBOX is doing what really matters, running Twitter polls and hanging out with Timdog

I feel like I caught a whiff of this when Hi-Fi Rush came, and Xbox looked like they were about to shed the 'has no games' stigma that everyone from social media and games media were in on. Felt like they were about to put out regular bangers. Then Microsoft snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

I've been playing games since my parents got us an Atari 2600, and my dad brought a Commodore 64 home from a coworker who was getting rid of it. Games are one of my biggest joys (and of my kids too). And seeing these big corporations not respecting this medium like many of us do, it infuriates me.

Hi-Fi Rush sold horribly on PS. Game pass or no Game Pass, South of Midnight is not covering their development. It's just not the kind of game people are willing to spend money on or subscribe to GP for.

The writing is on the wall: "taxes, taxes, taxes"

Absolutely. You need the quirky single player games way more than you need half a dozen shooters or "man with large sword swings large sword at boss" games. I guess the logic is you can just buy those outside, but it takes time to shut things down and then scout for second parties to take over.

Fact of the matter is, factory line logic works if you're making a bag of chips ahoy or a model of car, but it completely fails when applied to any kind of creative or artistic process, like video game making. Factory line logic is good at making copies, not creations.

The second Spencer and co. bought Activision, all previously announced acquisitions didn't make any sense anymore and it's been a continuous, steady bleed of studio closures and layoffs in the thousands ever since then. Sadly, this is just business as usual for MS at this point.

PS5 sales are on them. Players are forced to buy the deluxe edition of the game which boosts the price for stuff most players don’t care about

But Compulsion games wasn't that good

Especially since they've made a system where a hit means less for them financially than it does for anyone else
