I've been begging @zeit.de Online editor @wegner.io to translate and open their stellar coverage of America's fall for Americans. Here is a fine example: A European Declaration of Independence from America. Highly recommended. Vielen Dank, Jochen, mein Freund. www.zeit.de/kultur/2025-...

zeit.deEurope and the US: Thanks America, That’ll Be AllAndy Warhol, Big Mac, iPhone: It was a grand American epoch. But it’s over. Europe must finally emancipate itself – just not as awkwardly as Jürgen Habermas might like.

Here comes another fine example, echoing this, by @theatlantic.com „As Trump flirts dangerously with authoritarianism, Europe needs to save itself. If it can, Europe might also someday play a role in saving the United States.“ www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

theatlantic.comThe U.S. Has Changed Its Mind About EuropeAfter following America’s lead for 80 years, the continent’s democracies do not recognize the danger now before them.

Please, true blue American, read this article. See how Europe and especially Germany view America at this moment. Our government has brought the downfall of our place in the world. May we learn from this and, if given a chance when this is over, to earn a place as a partner, not overlords.

Thanks for that. I fear that Canadians are in for a long period of disorientation. While our geography unavoidably places us within the sphere of the Americans, our values, priorities, and aspirations lie on the other side of the ocean. I don't know how this will end up.

"We must simply be too proud to constantly be led around by these shameless Americans. And unwilling to constantly adopt – or even comment on – their greatest nonsense." One of several money quotes in here

A great line from the piece: “Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk put it rather succinctly: ‘It’s striking but it’s true. Right now, 500 million Europeans are begging 300 million Americans for protection from 140 million Russians.’”

I can’t imagine reading something like that in any American newspaper today. With the exception of the praise of the New York Times, it’s a spectacularly, painful reminder of who we are seen as today. I would support this financially in a heartbeat.

American here. Ashamed of the harm and disrespect we are inflicting on our allies, grieving the loss of cherished friendships that have enriched our shared cultures and security. Respectful of whatever you need to do, hope you will forgive us someday.
