yes, it's people who have extracted value from ai vs. people who have only seen it extract value from them. i don't think people who have been exploited owe any grace to those evangelizing it to them, which is why i wish enthusiasts would leave the skeptics alone and stop acting like the underdogs

increasingly believing much of the communication gap between LLM Enthusiasts and LLM Skeptics on this website boils down to “are you someone who has largely experienced a *reasonable* amount of job security in tech, or are you someone who has not experienced job security and likely aren’t in tech”

i once made a joke about how once you turn 30 the government mails you a bottle of tums and i got scolded about how tums is actually not good for heartburn and they hate how people say otherwise. i figured they struggle with heartburn in a different way than i do. i tried something new: ignored them

evangelists who demand acknowledgement that ai is useful from people who do not find it useful have to work on something within themselves. people who do not find ai useful who spend their time scolding this kind of evangelist are never going to stop feeling like they're losing the battle

most communication gaps parallel an emotional intelligence gap which is not surprising to experience entering tech-centric discourse. i do wish tech people would listen to artisans more, a lot can be learned from them when you meet them as equals and not as expendable

a friend messaged me after my ai consciousness thread yesterday and said they found my ai stance "confusing" and that's bc i do not center ai in my life, i center people. that's why there's nuance, and my large word count is commensurate with how much thought i've put into it and i haven't finished

the disconnect comes from the fact that this precluded the existence of new media art / media art. I agree with a lot of what you said, but there are very specifically non-tech bro media artists who are making medium specific art with generative AI *as artists* with an art historical background

This is a really important mental health tip. I've had to mute colleagues and unfollow some accounts, but it has helped give me space to not be _as_ depressed every time I look at the computer. Little value in "fighting" the endless stream of pushy and cheerfully amoral enthusiasm for it all.

honestly even as a dev who uses these models daily for coding, the evangelists are exhausting. it's just a tool, not a religion. let people be skeptical

I would also say that very passionate evangelists in the former category unable to understand that the technology could put them in the latter category quite soon is somewhat maddening. I’ve also seen so many people offload their cognition to the point of regressing to adult infant mode.

i would say that the egregiously passionate evangelists are already in the latter! i mean, spending more time advertising ai than making something creative with it makes them an unpaid influencer for billionaires. actually, they're the ones literally paying

i don’t get why evangelists feel so entitled to positive regard it’s so much more intense entitlement than any previous “war” we’ve seen before (languages, editors, operating systems etc). and they don’t even seem to enjoy arguing, they want to be praised and told they’re correct
