i really think genai causes actual brain damage. probably faster than most ways you can on purpose give yourself brain damage. and if you hear this statement as literally as i mean it i think it sounds sorta conspiracy nut, but undeniably less conspiracy nut than the apparent sum of its parts

i think we're not gonna fully hear about what exactly it did to people for years, it's by nature hard to see and hard to look right at, but i think it starts to actively corrode your ability to think, basically immediately, on impact, passing cleanly between your existing cognitive defenses

i think gen ai is like termites for your brain. gets in your head without you noticing and starts dismantling things, and the first thing it dismantles is your ability to notice it dismantling things

i honestly think if you sit someone down to chatgpt for the first time, in many cases you literally have about 20 minutes to tackle them away from it before some amount of damage is permanent

yeah like. up until recently the ability to get the equivalent of 10 kicks in the head from a horse per day was gated behind immense wealth in most cases. now anyone can annihilate their brain, more efficiently than ever before bsky.app/profile/stup...

I honestly think it's the same as billionaire brain disease; when someone else does all your thinking for you and all you get is sycophancy in return, your brain turns to custard.

also i think a certain class of nerd has a built-in weakness to this shit: people who think they're immune to advertising, or argued violent video games can't be bad because media isn't psychologically affecting. basically climbing into a furnace because you assume you can't be harmed

Yeah tbh I already feel like I’ve tangibly lost something with the advent of gps and cell phones. I used to be able to navigate the entire east coast with just a map and I feel like that part of my brain has atrophied

yeah, i for a while have been trying to at least like: use the gps to drive somewhere for the first time and then try to use it less and then not at all when going to that place. but for a while i was literally using it for every drive that wasn't like, the local shop

there's this one part of my drive to a mate's house where i'm coming off a bridge on the highway and it's hard to know which of two right-next-to-each-other exits is mine, and i've realised recently it's only hard because i'm looking at the gps and not the fucking signs????

The prime example for me was calculators. I was really good at mental arithmetic, then we got a teacher that forced us to use calculators, and now I can't calculate shit without reaching for that device. LLMs are a lot like that. It's easier to make them think, than to use ones own brain.

If I extrapolate from that, thinking about what could be lost if I let a word prediction machine or “art” creation machine take over other parts of my life? Fucking horrifying. I’m already trying to claw back parts of my cognition from COVID almost killing me and that’s a fucking nightmare
