i really think genai causes actual brain damage. probably faster than most ways you can on purpose give yourself brain damage. and if you hear this statement as literally as i mean it i think it sounds sorta conspiracy nut, but undeniably less conspiracy nut than the apparent sum of its parts

I went to this bar popular with college students recently. Eavesdropped on two CS majors who were talking about how they rely on ChatGPT way too much and were trying to comfort themselves by saying that they could probably still get a job somewhere by relying on AI coding help.

All I can think about is how millionaires and billionaires have been experiencing that brain damage decades before us plebs got the chance to. How fried their brains must be.

Billionaire brain for the masses. Does all the same things to remove any critical thinking or push back only the affirmative coddling. Our brains shrivel under that is my hypothesis.

i think we're not gonna fully hear about what exactly it did to people for years, it's by nature hard to see and hard to look right at, but i think it starts to actively corrode your ability to think, basically immediately, on impact, passing cleanly between your existing cognitive defenses

i think gen ai is like termites for your brain. gets in your head without you noticing and starts dismantling things, and the first thing it dismantles is your ability to notice it dismantling things

i honestly think if you sit someone down to chatgpt for the first time, in many cases you literally have about 20 minutes to tackle them away from it before some amount of damage is permanent

yeah like. up until recently the ability to get the equivalent of 10 kicks in the head from a horse per day was gated behind immense wealth in most cases. now anyone can annihilate their brain, more efficiently than ever before bsky.app/profile/stup...

I honestly think it's the same as billionaire brain disease; when someone else does all your thinking for you and all you get is sycophancy in return, your brain turns to custard.

Yeah tbh I already feel like I’ve tangibly lost something with the advent of gps and cell phones. I used to be able to navigate the entire east coast with just a map and I feel like that part of my brain has atrophied

yeah, i for a while have been trying to at least like: use the gps to drive somewhere for the first time and then try to use it less and then not at all when going to that place. but for a while i was literally using it for every drive that wasn't like, the local shop

The prime example for me was calculators. I was really good at mental arithmetic, then we got a teacher that forced us to use calculators, and now I can't calculate shit without reaching for that device. LLMs are a lot like that. It's easier to make them think, than to use ones own brain.

If I extrapolate from that, thinking about what could be lost if I let a word prediction machine or “art” creation machine take over other parts of my life? Fucking horrifying. I’m already trying to claw back parts of my cognition from COVID almost killing me and that’s a fucking nightmare

IMO the big reveal will be when the big models go offline when the bubble pops and maintaining them is no longer possible. there'll still be people using local models, but everyone who is burning tokens to have their phone talk to datacentres is gonna have to go cold-turkey.

Here's what I gather about "really harmful things humanity has done and not realized its extent of until later". It took us a good while to really understand how bad leaded gasoline was. Considering how bad early studies on AI-usage are right now, I really think the reality is going to be VERY bad.

There was a study years ago from the University of Toronto (I think) where they found that playing games in which all the navigation is done for you, via mini maps and objective markers, can literally rot your hippocampus. Resulting in depression and increased risk of Alzheimer's.

I used to play a survival game that didn't really have a map system and it was great for building your own navigation skills by location recognition. I tried to take it a little further in my own sand box and tried to build in workable solar and celestial navigation for those that found it.

i did a blog post about this actually bsky.app/profile/joew...

here's a blog post i did about gta4 and "playing the minimap", and how you should turn off the minimap in gta4 because it annihilates the entire experience and imo that's 90% of the time what a minimap does is make you have a shit time instead of a good time. www.joewintergreen.com/gta4-minimap...
