Mullvad is generally the way to go. themarkup.org/the-breakdow... But the Proton suite is also persuasive as a more generalist solution for more than just a VPN. I use Mullvad as a Tailscale exit node, which is a little different, but really swell once you get it set up. tailscale.com/mullvad

I mostly use the free version of proton, which has been pretty good so far

And they employ extra security features I haven't seen anywhere else, including an additional layer of experimental quantum resistant encryption
