My best craft advice is "Put a giant worm in it." You can never go wrong with a giant worm. Sci-fi: Giant worm on an alien planet Fantasy: Giant worm in mountain sitting on a pile of gold Horror: Giant worm (eats people) Romance: Giant worm causes third-act breakup Mystery: Giant worm investigates

Writers: what’s a solid piece of *craft* advice you wish you’d known sooner? Mine is this: when making writing decisions, always stop and ask yourself what is best for the SCENE. What are the scene’s goals? Does this sentence, this paragraph, this line of dialogue serve those goals? If not, fix it.

Lit Fic: washed-out giant worm academic reinvigorated by relationship with younger annelid Police procedural: giant worm can't put gun and badge on boss's desk as has no hands Psychological Horror: Worm wakes up, discovers it's Franz Kafka
