the thing about indie games is that if someone designs one single game I love, I’ll get whatever they make for the rest of their lives and pretty much always have a good time. people are so attached to ip but imo you really gotta know the creators.

Even with bigger studios I think this is important. Who directed it? Who directed the gameplay specifically? Is a writer, artist or composer you really like somehow involved? Finding out these kinds of things always piques my interest in specific games.

Once you look into this, you'll realize there's actually a lot of cross-pollination between teams and projects, and suddenly it makes a lot more sense why certain games feel similar even though they were made by different companies.

post inspired by the blood dungeon launch and how nice it is that once someone has made flywrench you don’t even need to know anything and youll get nidhogg 1&2, wheel world and now blood dungeon without any algorithmic help necessary

It's wild how "THE NUMBERS FORETOLD YOU LIKING THIS" is so much less effective than "oh hey I recognize this dev" I wonder if anyone wrote any longer blog posts on the subject, I'd read the hell out of those

I have always said we need to treat game creators like Rockstars. Popsok calling themselves a gamedev boyband had it right! We need to start branding ourselves. Start saying crazy shit. If I say: you know that Nazi gamedev? U probably know a few. See what I mean? Don't say Nazi stuff though.

You probably know who said "imma let u finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time" But if you're in the game industry you probably also know who said "fuck the Oscars". It works for us too

I think aside from maybe one or two big companies, I am mostly loyal to 1-2-person indie devs who create lovingly made games and who I know from itch. Seeing the pure range and progress from their first game to their most recent masterpiece is chef's kiss.

Bonus points if the genres are different. "What's that Daniel Mullins, now that you've done a cross genre multi PoV narrative meta game you're making a card game? I'm in!" "Why yes, I WILL play the voice-driven tactical squad shooter, Iridium studios, you made my favorite triple DDR RPG after all!"

1,000%. I constantly wish there was an IMDB style site to look up who did what on which games, but there's little consistency in job titles in games. "Developer" covers a lot of territory. It's often hard to tell which person is responsible for the awesome spaceship designs or the perfect UI icons.

Completely agree with this. I've had indie games I've enjoyed a lot before, but they were usually part of a group that I couldn't really contact for one reason or another. Language barriers, primarily. When I played Decline's Drops and got to talk to Drazglb. personally, I'm 100% invested now.
