It was revealed last week that Trump got a $10 billion bribe for helping steal TikTok and give it to his right wing billionaire friends under the pretense of national security and it barely enjoyed a two hour news cycle

Incidentally, the special prosecutor tasked with that investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing. So he was sacked, and Kenneth Starr was brought in to get something - anything - on Bill Clinton.

The WSJ feebly points out this is curiously unprecedented, but they can't be bothered to inform readers out the TikTok deal didn't actually solve any of the problems the trump administration professed to address

Let me clearly state; I do not support anything Trump has done or will do but.... This is no great mystery. The $$ is not going to "the Trump administration." It's a payment to the US treasury. "payment to the Trump administration" & other such wording is disingenuous click-baity stuff.

you have absolutely zero indication that's true, there is absolutely no transparency here. You're making assumptions based on normal political realities.

in fact I think you could argue it's worse, because the previous Bytedance ownership was at least worried about being kicked out of the U.S. if they didn't behave semi-ethically Larry Ellison, who supports a complete demolition of U.S. corporate oversight, faces arguably less ethical constraints

"But Karl," I say confidentially in cocksure reply on Bluesky, "both the NYT and WSJ clearly say the money wound it's way to treasury! They would never say that without obtaining independently verifiable confirmation from lying fascists!"

$10B "brokerage fee" to allow Ellisons to take over TikTok. Cool, cool, cool. Just $1B of that could refund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and bring back weekend Newshour and funding for local NPR stations. What say ye, Brendan Carr? www.wsj.com/tech/tiktok-...

Far worse, i would posit. He won't face any legal pressure from this admin about illegal surveillance or data gathering or censorship as long as he has the "right targets", and they will likely work to quash any state action.

The real problem was Those Meddling K-Pop Kids using TikTok to spread how to scarf up free tickets to Trump's rallies so real MAGAs couldn't get them, but Trump's team later figured out how to use TikTok to do better campaigning and he got less mad. By then the Dems had bought in to his xenophobia.

Any idiot could have seen that the national security claims were a ruse. That the right wanted TikTok. Democrats were dumber than idiots for going along with it.
