I must have missed this Karl. I literally just searched “Tim Cook” because I’m thinking about upgrading but I’m just so disgusted with this gutless toady. I was hoping to find someone bashing him and it looks like you answered the call.

"But the interviewer never really challenges Cook's overt support for autocratic zealots who are actively (and unsubtly) destroying literally everything Tim Cook claims to believe in." Money will do that to people. And since those with money will NEVER be affected, they'll never give a flying F...

None of the above feels like Cook to be honest. He’s had f-u money for decades by now. If anything he seems to be a very corporate, very loyal to Apple person. If he thinks the interest of Apple is best serve by appeasing Trump, he’ll put his personal qualms to the side and stick to his job.

The bet he’s making though is that there’s more hurt in defying the Trump administration than if playing nice with him for 4 years and try to leave it all behind once that page is turned. Maybe his forthcoming retirement is part of his view - him leaving in due time may help move Apple along.

My favorite part of Cook's time as CEO is that they have only released one new hardware product that wasn't just an iPhone accessory, and it was a VR headset that no one bought They've also resorted to strong arming *other* industries to make *their* products shitty iPhone accessories, too

thank you for reading it I wanted to add something about how their software is pretty clunky in there but the paragraph was getting too long 😋

I was going to say, those little digs at the brand feel misdirected. Don’t look those rose tinted glasses of your youth get the best of you - today’s Apple is as innovative as they ever were hardware-wise (and software is mostly good). The thing they’re missing is the irreverence of the Jobs years.

The whole company under Jobs was just as well disciplined as they are today but Jobs - in interviews or in some whimsical product design choices - was able to be very “fuck you, this sucks” candid. The Cook era certainly has lost that and this dovetails nicely with the point you’re making.

I will be reading this one… been ranting about Apple for years. Starting in 2013 with iOS 7… Cook’s sucking up to Trump was the last straw on me giving him the benefit of the doubt as a human being of any ethical value.

You may have a beautifully written essay, but it's hard to take it seriously when literally the first sentence is wrong. The company is not called Apple Computer, it hasn't had that name since 2007.

brief rant/compliment: this piece is an interesting contrast with the new yorker article on sam altman. you get to the point without loads of filler and repetition, and also don't bury the lede about supporting fascism. this is a bigger story than a CEO's personality disorder.

I wish media was more pointed about who/what these people are and the threat fascism represents even good pieces on this put me to sleep before I reach the meat, just entire rooms full of pulled punches

they also try to play Altman off like he's some kind of rhetorical genius based on the ease with which he manipulates employees who depend on him to pay their bills. sure, dude. whatever you say. he's such an amazeballs communicator that millions of us are rejecting his sloppy products and vision.

Right?? Again the author misses the real story about how ignorant, gullible CEOs keep wasting billions of dollars per year based on Altman’s obvious lies/nonsense.

Those personality disorders are only made up to give a reasonable excuse for their obvious personality flaws. They never have a medical condition, but are simply awful people.
