Tesco is extending its Kids Eat Free scheme to 7 days a week over the summer, where children get a free meal with an adult purchase, but honestly, this detail about how small the adult purchase can be broke my heart.

I’ve used this loads but didn’t realise you could redeem more than one kid’s meal with each purchase. Got two kids so I’ve been borrowing my wife’s clubcard to put through two separate purchases, get myself a coffee and some toast and feed both kids. This makes it a lot easier!

Disgusting that the country is set up so that people need this. I have no problem with people being wealthy, but they could all still be eye wateringly wealthy, while everyone else has enough to live with dignity.

Tesco is an immensely wealthy company, so I guess this will hardly make a dent in their profits, still they did not have to do it. As you say, though, it is alarming the state we have reached when people are now dependent on this to feed children during school holidays. Pay and benefits were lagging

Supermarket revenues are very high - but corresponding profit margins are really pretty pathetic (2-5%) Profits sit with the food producers - likes of Nestle, Mondelez. Think 5-15% and likes of Coca Cola over 20% ! So some kudos to Tesco. Though I'm sure it's not purely altruistic!

UK supermarkets used to make 8%, it was only the arrival in the UK of Lidl and Aldi that narrowed the margins. Still I think Tesco is back to having every 1 in 10 pounds spent in retail in the UK spent in one of their outlets or online with them.

That was about 2004? And I think we're agreeing about their overbearing market dominance, but I still hold them with respect (if transactional affection) They compete effectively on price, diversify where they can, use own-brands (especially meat) to boost their overall margins.....

well behind the rising cost of living even before the inflation 'shocks' of the Ukraine War, US tariffs and now the latest Iran wars. If Burnham does nothing else he needs to raise benefits and the minimum wage to prevent the UK returning to Victorian-style conditions.

I wonder how many Tesco staff have to use this because they only get paid minimum wage. It’s a great scheme, don’t get me wrong, but they are in a position to solve the source of the issue, not just offer ways to help the problem it’s caused

I... don't see how that's true at all...? They don't stop you from buying five pizzas as the "adult purchase" and absolutely stuffing your face. All they're saying is if you're ALREADY STARVING because you can't afford to buy more than an apple, at least there's no need to starve your kids as well.

And I don't really see how only making this offer available to people who can afford to buy more than a single would help either those who just can't afford a purchase like that 𝘰𝘳 their children, who would then not get to eat anything either 😅

It’s not saying the adult only *has* to have an apple to feed the kids for free, but *can if necessary*. Getting the kids some food for free is exactly the reason the parent might be able to eat that day

And I was not implying that they *have* to, nor having ago at the OP. I was talking about the fact of the imbalance. And yes, getting a free kids meal may mean the parent can eat that day, but c'mon, is that a world we want? That was the point.

I'd like to live in a world where the whole family can afford to eat at the restaurant or at home and not need to rely on getting the kids fed for free, so the parent can eat. Of course, to be clear, I am wholly in favour of free school meals for all kids.

Is there an age limit to this only because my folks are visiting next week & they are in their 80's so without sounding like a tight arse it could be well cheap for me🤣
