Dang, the person reapplied with another name?!
Anyhow great take. And I agree on the alternative title.
Iโve been mentoring a couple junior devs looking for work.
I keep telling them they need to be meeting people irl. But they donโt seem to get it.

Nothing beats human interaction.
I am so fortunate to have met you and hang out in person Kent.
Same goes for every person Iโve met at conferences or meetups.
Thatโs why I love organizing in person meetups and also believe that during recruitment meeting in person is always better.
I am definitely beginning to understand this more.
One other important thing is that once you make it to a conference you then have to just throw yourself in to speaking to other people even if at first it can feel awkward ๐
I like the sound of a conference actually helping attendees do this ๐
Great article, now I am thinkingโฆ. I need will do more connections
Iโm work at home because that is hard for me make new connections but I need change that
When applying for jobs, I realized that a personal, a bit funny and obviously human-written cover letter cut through the noize way better than a more thorough and formal cover letter. Probably because it stood out way more against the AI written cover letters I was competing with.
Great article Kent! Out of interest, how expensive is the epic web camp? Looking to plan my workโs learning budget for 2025 and I canโt find the price online
Thanks!
It's not priced out yet. It'll be Monday-Thursday (with an optional UtahJS conf ticket on Friday) and lodging and meals are included. So it's a lot of value there. But I'm hoping to secure enough sponsorship so tickets are less than $1k
Great read! Thank you for posting this Kent!
I just moved to the US earlier this year, and I have been procrastinating on making connections here in the web dev space. I think this post finally gave me some good motivation to get started and join some local events ๐
I just recently had someone tell me that in person conferences were a waste of time. I didn't agree at all, but it's really nice to have someone articulate some strong reasons as to why.
