They removed CD/DVD drives from PCs. -Made physical media harder to buy and use. -Removed expandable storage from phones. -Pushed us into streaming subscriptions. -Made always-online normal. -Made unlimited internet necessary. -Slowly raised the price of everything. Ownership quietly became renting.

I’ve been through the “computer era” since the 80s and honestly it’s been a pain in the butt, and don’t ask about how you get questions answered🤪

This! I miss local offices the most! Pay the bill in person. Customer service, in person. Even walking up to a line man for the Internet company, they're always nice, but all appointments have to be made thru the painfully long 1-800 number. Eliminate the middle man. We can co-op everything.

And we let them. And by 'we' I mean Apple users. Because, as you might all recall, this bullshit of not owning anything and being totally subject to the whims of all the 'proprietary' tech you own, no right to repair, or buy 3rd party, etc was pioneered by iTunes, and then expanded everywhere.

I’m 75. I was recently looking at the small mountain of tapes (yep, still have a lot) & dvds & cds still stashed in various spots of the house & garage and thinking the same thing. I paid good $ for them & now they are trash my kids will no doubt send to the already planet killing dump when I go.

You can get all of that moved to a hard drive and help others in your community do the same... A smallish lifetime pcloud license for cloud storage backup or trading backup external HDDs with a neighbour you helped do the same and you are golden. Since you are able to do this... You can do that 🌟

There must be someone out there who would be interested in your media. You are actually preserving history. That will be important when the corporations get everything online with no physical backup that consumers can access. Because then they can change history with no one able to question them.

I am aware. I have a blu ray player & DVD's. I still have my CD's, but I'm done with the shttty players. & They have ALWAYS been shtty. Have to baby them or they skip. So much easier to use my phone for music w/a Bluetooth. & I will stream over watch the movie on Blu-ray cause the player is so slow

& I remember my green computer that was an absolute pain in the arse! Slow! I do not want to go backwards! We can hold these corporates accountable & set regulations. & The entertainment had been 💩 since day one! Run by greedy, corporate scum! Artists are always fighting! Why we have writer strikes.

In libraries, they stopped selling us serials and books, forcing us into subscription models, meaning that libraries no longer own their materials and have little means of preserving their collections for the future.

They may made it but you didn’t have to buy it. I still got -DVD/CD player / discs -cassette player/tapes -record player/LP -back up photos Your choice

Most of my media has been ripped and sits on my NAS or backup HDs. Very time consuming but worth it in the long run. What most people don't understand is that CD/DVDs degrade over time, even HD platters and SSD drives are not immune to degrading. That aside the regular public just doesn't care.

Archiving for the long haul is difficult. Analog sources degrade just like digital ones. That said, I enjoy my personal media library in all it's facets, and very thankful for public libraries.

...which is why some of us old guys are keeping our old tech working. I keep VCRs, burn my own CDs, use a phone that is still (barely) able to stay on the the network despite the newest software upgrades, and maintain my music on multiple external hard drives as well as vinyl. #NotQuiteObsoleteYet

How do you buy music now without having to pay monthly for a streaming service. I still buy CDs. I’m tired of paying for music and having to pay monthly for a streaming service in order to listen to the music I BOUGHT.

I swear by the new flash drives that have both USB-A and USB-C connectors. It freaks my coworkers and classmates out that I can move files faster than they can set up a presentation off the cloud. 🤪 And they connect to my phone too. “Retro” has so many perks.

I still remember the year Quickbooks decided to charge an annual fee to update payroll tax tables for my already purchased business software. I said no and got the booklets from IRS to look up deductions myself. Mind-boggling.

The same strategy is in play for the upcoming Ai revolution. Another way of isolating & marginalizing low income families. Make it cheap, make it an integral part of everyday life, from bills to banking, to access to Dr's etc. Automated, essential & then price the lower classes out if the loop.

My hard drive came with 2 Cd/Dvd slots. It's only 2 years old too. So I can transfer music to my phone. Honestly, I own movies & will stream cause it's faster than using the Blu Ray. I only use it if I can't find it streaming. Tubi & others are free too. Lots of free movies out there.

I hear young people who can't afford to buy a home talking about the drinks they had at a bar. I still only drink water at bars. One drink at a bar costs as much as alcohol for a family party. Same with eating out. The cost of food for two would provide enough for a party.

Wow! This is some maga b 💩! So youth do not deserve to enjoy their lives! No one should be slaving away, getting paid sh t, while billionaires & bow a trillionaire, exists! You are defending horrible, greedy, people! Every single person deserves housing, water, food & to enjoy themselves!

Volunteer time to elect great representatives. We SHOULD have low interest loans for first time home buyers. We SHOULD have great public education. We SHOULD have plenty of funding for libraries. Also, YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY MIGHT HAVE A "LIBRARY OF THINGS", Call on Monday and find out.

I’m now consciously: -Writing in notebooks again -Putting my grocery list on a small piece of scrap paper -Reading physical books -embracing activities that do not involve a screen (playing music, knitting, cooking) -listening to CDs on my old stereo Moving away from being tethered to tech.

I've tried many flavors of Linux, installed/admined Linux and FreeBSD on work servers. Retired now and have been using Kubuntu on a couple boxes for a year or so, been very happy with it. Tried Mint a few years back and it was okay until an upgrade completely borked it 😞

I'd say Mint is best for newbz like myself. Someone that has only ever had out of the box, pre-built PCs and too chicken to dig around the files. And the learning curve from moving off of windows is easiest.

Trick is to stream only one service at a time. Get what you can get outta’ it, cancel, then go to another. I never have more than $20 a month for the rip off artists. Or, watch the free channels. And, cancel cable. It’s become one long waste of time watching ads.

This is what I do. But everyone needs to remember, the people who run the entertainment business are all bad. This is why Artists are always fighting & have had to create their own labels, but studios(music & film/TV) are still owned by big labels. Only way to eff them is to support local only.

Go to Shakespeare in the Park & support local theater. Local musicians. Local athletes. Local comedians.. people have been bought by the mainstream & your local Artists are just as talented, but aren't willing to fit into a box run by greedy rich arses.

I never bought into this and dislike renting my music collection. I want the best version of favorites, not any version they decide to put out there. It depends on if you want music to be magic or just something to play in the background.

Oh no. Record players drove me nuts. & I have records. They basically sit up high, so my cats cannot get to them & act as pieces of artwork. I never liked the muffled sound either. I like the ease of my phone & Bluetooth. I own my music on CD & transfer to my phone w/my computer.

Yes. I have an old computer with a CD/DVD drive. I think I’ll keep it. I used to cast the yoga DVD to the TV. I have an external CD/DVD drive for my laptop, but I rarely use it. Seeing your post does expand one’s perceptions. Smh.

And each new smartphone you get will have the contents (photos and videos) of every single smartphone you’ve “owned” prior transferred onto it, requiring ever expanding storage space. Which also requires paying for a cloud if you want it protected. And don’t forget updates stop for old phones 😭🤭

EVERY FUCKING THING has to be monitized. You have to pay for internet and tv streaming services, and still have pay to watch more commercials than before and more frequently

I got an external cd drive for laptop, burned my cds, then added all to my android phone! 5,000+ songs to enjoy. Still aggravated no cd player in new cars!! I kept my dvds to enjoy! Pay for 1 streaming only!
