Bats have long been associated with the spirit of Halloween, and no bat is more on theme than vibrant orange-and-black painted wooly bats. 🦇🎃 Yet the truly scary thing about them is how quickly their populations are declining — primarily due to being killed so their bodies can be used for decor. 🧵

With rainy season upon us, muddy elephants will be even more of a frequent sight than they are now. This Sunday Smile shows us that Bambi–and especially Maia–are more than prepared for the upcoming wet days.

We've never posted these before! These are the 35mm slides from when Hugo van Lawick documented Dr. Jane and her landmark research. With shots like these, the world could see what Jane saw. Few had ever seen chimpanzees like this before. Photos: Hugo van Lawick / Vanne Morris-Goodall

Time has flown and Tytan has grown! In the year since he arrived at our Nursery, our orphaned black rhino has grown from a 300-kilogramme rescue into an impressive youngster weighing close to 450 kilogrammes! Yet he remains very much a baby at heart, enjoying naps with best friend Notty.

A sight we’ll never tire of. Our ex-orphans came to visit on Sunday, and Nesheshi had the honour of leading the herd. After her mother was shot and killed, reaching her meant airlifting her in a customised sling beneath our helicopter from a remote corner of Laikipia.

Our friend the Mrora Forest Toad lives in the coastal areas of Tanzania, including the the Mafia Island and Zanzibar! Like yesterday's toad, they are a member of genus Mertensophryne, known as "snouted toads" because of their somewhat pointy noses! (photo by dmblokz)

Ashanti’s name means strength, courage and resilience. She has needed all three to survive. A poacher’s snare severed her trunk, cutting off the ‘fingers’ that let African elephants forage so dextrously. Then she got stuck in mud. Our rangers found her in the nick of time.

From stuck in the mud to starting her own family: meet Ithumbah. Sixteen years ago, our Ithumba team found a young calf trapped in a drying dam, caked in grey mud. Today, that same elephant is living wild and is the mother of two beautiful daughters – Iman, born in 2022, and Iris last November.

No, this isn't a promo for the latest season of The Last of Us. It's a map of U.S. rivers and streams contaminated with harmful levels of the pesticide #atrazine. You know, the chemical that's so dangerous it's banned in more than 60 countries.

Watch out, Amali – Latika is keen to take your mantle as top nanny! Our girl with the short trunk and big heart only graduated to Umani in December and took time to find her place. Now she is one of the family, with a soft spot for Lenny – and he’s certainly putting her through her paces!
