Global warming reached an estimated 1.51°C in May 2025. 'If the 15-year warming trend leading up to then continued, global warming would reach 2°C by December 2036' May was the first month below this trend in almost two years. Global warming accelerated significantly!

During our Climate Chat, someone asked when we reach +3.0°C with current warming rates. Here I extrapolated the warming rate from 'Global Warming has Accelerated Significantly' by Grant Foster and Stefan Rahmstorf (2025 preprint) to up to +4°C (extending their table 1):

No one should be surprised when a planet that accumulates heat more than twice as fast starts to see temperatures go up more than twice as fast. This isn't rocket science, but we do need more of these NASA satellites. 🌍🛰 To keep us from going blind. bsky.app/profile/leon...

🚨Earth's energy imbalance more than doubled in recent decades🚨 'if surprises lie ahead, for example, from unexpectedly large aerosol forcing (Hansen et al., 2023), or an unexpected loss of climate stability, then the imbalance is the first place this can be detected' doi.org/10.1029/2024...

Glad to have found you here - after been bumped from FB bsky.app/profile/rudy...

Industrial emissions took decades to grow to the behemoth apparent since the 1970s, but once they did, Earth's Energy Imbalance (EEI) became traceable as global warming. Earth's base temperature is rising because the oceans are warming. Think of a bathroom air heated by a tub of hot water.

you saw this? This scenario interacting with sulphur reduction is driving up temperatures even faster: bsky.app/profile/terl...

#globaleErhitzung #Klimakatastrophe

And maybe further… would you expect this imbalance to level off again in the near future? Pretty astonishing nobody in the main media does pickup this topic…

@weatherwest.bsky.social might not be aware of some of the most recent publications on this. Global heat uptake increased more than predicted by models, with the NASA CERES observations indicating it's mainly from Absorbed Solar Radiation increase: bsky.app/profile/leon...

It's worst over the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude oceans: bsky.app/profile/leon...

To whom it may concern, There is a lot of confusion about how much shipping sulphur emissions have limited global and regional warming. I recommend everyone to look at the actual data. Most relevant data: -CEDS int. shipping SO₂ emissions -Sea Surface Temperatures -NASA CERES Flux data 1/x

Thank you Rob, great summary. The effect of shipping desulphurization is notable, as it is having a larger impact than a similar emission reductions over land would have. I tried to visualize this a while back like this:

Als je ziet wat de mensheid allemaal mag flikken met de wereld voor er van 'hogerhand' wordt ingegrepen, dan vraag ik me toch echt af wat bijvoorbeeld de dino's hebben misdaan, indertijd? Die zijn toch wel heel stevig aangepart, niet?
