Weird, how reality is more alarming than ostensibly "alarmist" climate scientists were not too long ago. And this is still just at the beginning of a warming trend that will continue for several decades at least (unless human beings suddenly become much smarter than ever before. I have my doubts.)

The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

"human beings suddenly become much smarter" I disagree with calling ourselves stupid due to the way our societies are rigged to benefit companies (and their owners) profits rather than protect the common interest. This is a structural issue, not a "smarts" issue.

The only concession I might make is that people don't / haven't seen through this fact earlier. You might argue if we were smarter we'd have seen what the fossil fuel industry was up to with its decades long disinformation campaign, and that this was bound to happen in light of the tobacco strategy.

which is why i've been saying for years that if reality exceeds the assumed worst case scenarios, that's a good indicator that we're deep in climate collapse. zeke, though, disagrees, more so since he's had a child. go figure.
