#ArmageddonCapitalism 💲 >💚 = 🔥🌎 If you've made money instead of making the world safe, you think you'll survive a broken planet Evolutionarily, love is smarter than hunger, seeing causes and effects, predicting the future Culturally, we teach kids greed is virtuous... when it's immoral violence

Influence means asking what actually changes the trajectory. Scientists warned us. Why didn’t the warning produce sufficient action? What can we build, communicate, or organize differently now? I’m more interested in answering those questions than assigning blame.

Call it blame or accountability. If decades of warnings didn't work we need to be more assertive. Appeal to responsibility. Make it clear we all are in the same planet and weather is chaotic, selfishness won't shelter anyone against the effects of climate change.

A lily pond, so the French riddle goes, contains a single leaf. Each day the number of leaves doubles―two leaves the second day, four the third, eight the fourth, and so on. Q: If the pond is completely full on the thirtieth day, when is it half full? A: On the twenty-ninth day. - Lester R. Brown

Can you imagine some future civilization finding artifacts from mankind, like books of fiction that accurately predict our downfall... 'Hmm, they apparently knew exactly how their collapse would happen and they just...went with it. 🤷🏼'

This was the fashion of the moment... The continent of Europe was put into full blown panic in 1911 when word came back from Antarctica explorers that a huge island of ice had broken away from the Ross ice shelf. Stories of end-of-the-world sea level rise gripped the news for months.

There are also several scientific papers from the 19th century dealing with this. Arrhenius quantified it in 1896 and concluded that doubling CO2 would raise global temperature by about 3 degrees Centigrade. We're currently roughly halfway on both the CO2 and the temperature, unfortunately.

The March 1912 issue of Popular Mechanics had a 4 page article on it (339-432 if anyone wants to actually look it up), which cites Arrhenius and goes into detail about expected changes if coal consumption wasn't reduced or CO2 wasn't removed- though it's pretty upbeat, focusing on warmer weather!
