A lily pond, so the French riddle goes, contains a single leaf. Each day the number of leaves doubles―two leaves the second day, four the third, eight the fourth, and so on. Q: If the pond is completely full on the thirtieth day, when is it half full? A: On the twenty-ninth day. - Lester R. Brown

Bangladesh faces a massive structural deficit, requiring $90 billion in international funding for #climatechange mitigation by 2035, while #adaptation needs remain largely underfunded and dependent on domestic resources, according to climate finance expert M. Zakir Hossain Khan.

California’s coastal habitats just gained protections: The Mishopshno and Point Sal State Marine Conservation Areas have been approved. This marks a new era in ocean conservation, as these are the first Tribally led marine protected areas for the state.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has warned that 96% of the world's shallow-water coral reefs are critically endangered due to the severe impacts of #climatechange. Combined with El Niño cycles, there is a high risk of total reef ecosystem collapse by 2075.

Major global systems, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Triangle, are currently categorized as critically endangered under this first-of-its-kind IUCN assessment. While the situation is dire, there remains a window for recovery through CO2e reductions and conservation efforts.

It's the 20th anniversary of California's landmark #climatechange legislation, AB32, the Global Warming Solutions Act. The state is only halfway to its 2030 target and, at the current pace, may not meet it until 2034; the 2045 goal requires even steeper cuts in GHG emissions.

latimes.comTwenty years after California's landmark climate law, the state is not on track to meet its targetsCalifornia is only about halfway to its 2030 greenhouse gas reduction goal, according to the state's latest inventory, released in September.

To meet AB32's goal of cutting CO2 emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, an additional 86 million metric tons of carbon must be cut in the next four years. The 2045 goal — cutting emissions to 85% below 1990 levels — requires reductions of 8.8% per year starting in 2030.

unep.orgAs temperatures spike, this new report outlines humanity’s options for containing climate changeThe Emissions Gap Report 2026 declares that we will soon be passing 1.5°C, and outlines pathways to bring temperatures back down.

To return to the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target by the end of the century, humanity must implement immediate, deep emissions cuts of 18 per cent by 2030, 45 per cent by 2035, and 69 per cent by 2040. The "Super El Niño" event has triggered Kelvin waves: planetary-scale deep ocean waves that transport warm water from the Pacific toward the West Coast of the Americas. When Tropical Storm Rachel hit, a storm surge flooded neighborhoods and left oceanfront homes partially submerged.

npr.orgA Kelvin wave raised sea levels on the West Coast. More are comingA large underwater wave moved up the West Coast, raising sea levels. Scientists say it's driven by El Niño and it's going to happen again.

The next Kelvin wave will reach San Diego in late October or early November. Several more waves are expected through the fall and early winter. Kelvin waves usually subside before the peak of El Niño,according to Josh Willis, a climate scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier is melting significantly faster than previously estimated due to warm seawater penetrating deep beneath the ice. Scientists now project that the 'Doomsday Glacier' could contribute up to 30 millimeters to global sea-level rise by 2100. www.aa.com.tr/en/greenline...

Scientists identified 'tidal pumping' as a critical mechanism that allows warm water to reach the glacier's grounding zone, where it melts the ice from below and threatens to detach the glacier from the underwater Mouginot Ridge, which could occur as early as the late 2030s.

India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer. This year’s El Niño — a recurring natural phenomenon that scrambles weather around the world — has left many of the fields parched, just a year after the fields were drenched by excess rains and devoured by pests.

Peru's government has enforced a total closure of the anchoveta fishing season in 2026 to protect marine resources amidst the exceptionally severe El Niño event. Industrial overfishing has also historically exacerbated the volatility of stock levels.
