I remember in the early Bluesky days convincing people to come over here from Twitter because the amount of authentic engagement was like 10x higher. Now I get significantly more engagement on a Threads account with 3k followers than 36k here 🥀

Even Mastodon is more active now. Idk what happened but it feels like Bluesky went from one of the top social media platforms, to dying mall vibes in the space of less than a year.

Is the team really listening to what power-ish users want... Menswear guy was asking for the ability to post more than 1 video, or similar? And we got a photo carousel instead.... Dan A regularly calls out various bugs and tweaks that could be made and how many are fixed.

I think they're stuck in an echo chamber with the largest Bluesky users who like the current status quo because it means they dominate every discourse

Idk, Mastodon doesn't have one either and I think that actually heavily favors accounts with large followings. I can easily get a post be on the front page of every major instance.

That would be trending algorithm on mastodon 😅 the active users on Mastodon has dropped off a cliff - it’s about 0.7m per month and that includes a great many spam accounts, but engagement is still high for people who actually post good content. But there’s a whole pretend there’s no algorithm thing

But to get into the trending algorithm you have to be like the top 10 more reposted post on that instance I think. But either way, kind of wild I can do 500-2k reposts on a platform with 0.7m users, but here it's like screaming into the void

I wonder if it's also because the bluesky discover feed has been tweaked so infosec doesn't escape containment after an early issue with @filippo.abyssdomain.expert, and the infosec niche is still quite small. Threads seems to amplify posts outside of topic niche where they get early engagement..

I feel like Threads has a more generic, general public feel to it, versus the more expert dialed in people here on Bluesky. (Of course your feed and followings may vary, etc.) Threads has vast amount of people because it is plugged into Meta, with engagement that might be a bit shallower than deep.

A lot of ppl gave Bluesky a shot. But once they saw the culture here, they left rather than stay and feel like they were walking on eggshells. SM is supposed to be fun and informative, a place for nuance and debate. This place isn't any of that. And that's why engagement is decreasing.
