GIS and map people: What was a place you explored remotely through maps that still managed to surprise you when you visited IRL? #gischat

YES! I think most GIS people have had the experience of becoming intimately familiar with a specific place from maps and satellite images and data. And then. Going there. For the first time. And seeing how it is still both recognizable and strange.

Point Pelee Peninsula. I have mapped the Great Lakes many times, and it stands out as a jagged triangle. Then in 2017 I was flying to Montréal, and I saw it from the air, and was just overwhelmed with emotion at seeing the lakes spread out before me, almost maplike, but not quite.

Jerash / Gerasa in Jordan. I had spent months working with a 0.1m lidar DTM and loads of aerials, including hefty use of ArcScene & some messing about with VR. When I went there it was so different I freaked out because the maps i made from all that data were based on a flawed understanding of place

Great Langdale, Cumbria. Had studied the OS map in detail beforehand and highlighted some walks but driving down the lane towards the end of it I nearly came off the road a few times gawping in wonderment.
