US garment workers helped pioneer multi-ethnic labor unions, which united people across racial, religious, gender, linguistic, and cultural divides. Also native-born citizens and immigrants. I think about that sometimes when I see people suggest such divides are unbridgeable.

“We don’t have enough water” is a common excuse for opposing new housing in Massachusetts. Since 1970, the MWRA region has added 810,000 people while cutting daily water demand in half, from nearly 400 million gallons to 200 million through leak repairs and efficient fixtures.

I was a dyed in the wool KDE hater for 17 years and then a year ago stuck at home for weeks woth COVID and bronchitis I had a feverish vision to test out like 2dozen Linux distros and anyway I'm a KDE guy now like I have a soft spot for konqueror and everything. Also Falkon is maybe the best browser

My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #1: Motorized transportation (trolleys and then cars) changed the scale of cities.

They've got a gripe with Hochul and no good way to voice it. Whether I agree or not, Americans are extremely averse to the kind of compromise/less bad of the two voting that our system is basically built on. Maybe it's time to give proportional voting and party coalitions a try

Sam@samd.bsky.social

why the FUCK is the transit workers union running anti-Hochul ads?? seems like they would literally rather have a Republican governor that would destroy the MTA for some insane reason?

I think, for what it's worth, people like this would feel better if they voted for their strange little special interest party, who later voted in coalition with a bunch of other parties for the same less bad governor. They'd feel better hiding behind the abstraction

This Day in Labor History: October 11, 1979. OSHA fined the chemical company American Cyanamid $10,000 for coercing women workers into sterilization if they wanted to work in jobs where they would be exposed to lead and chemicals. Let's talk how companies forced women to be sterilized in the 70s!

2nd busiest passenger rail corridor in the country if it were a freeway, even redundant to other freeways, it would be fixed immediately like the 10 after the fire in LA

I love taking the train between San Diego and Los Angeles since it's such a gorgeous view but there's just no way it'll still exist on the same track a generation from now. www.instagram.com/reels/DeSCAh...

This Day in Labor History: October 10, 1947. African workers on the Dakar-Niger Railway in modern Senegal went on strike with the demand that they be treated equal to French workers. This is a hugely important moment in both African labor history and the anticolonial struggle in west Africa!!!

Ok foamers here's the real question. If I'm paying the same or more for an Amtrak ticket to DC than I would to fly, why will the bathrooms on the NEC train all be fuckin no man's land whereas the head in the plane would be passable if not kinda clean? Despite a much better head to passenger ratio?
