Slowly reaching a point where I just don't care that much about the US anymore. Strengthening NATO and good transatlantic relations used to be what I cared about most in international politics, but now my faith in America is approaching zero

The US is still important and powerful, of course, but I no longer see it as this unique actor we're tethered to through history and culture and shared experience. It's just another big, oftentimes adversarial power we need to manage. America is becoming more normal, in a way. It's sad

If Americans no longer like NATO, so be it. If they don't like where Europe is going, so be it. You do you, we'll do our own thing. If we can cooperate, great. If you want to argue, okay. Give it a few more years and as we become more independent, we'll treat you like everyone else

I’m a 75 yo US citizen living in Spain. I am in precisely the same position. I don’t even recognize the country I grew up in. Furthermore, I find it unlikely that it will ever recover fully, even if MAGA is eventually rooted out.

There's still a seat for them at the table, but the road back from Trump is definitely a long one. My personal feeling (and I say this as a post-Brexit Brit) is that they really, really need a president to sit down in front of a camera and explain to them what the US' prosperity relies on.

American Exceptionalism is a hard drug to quit. The incessant propaganda about being the best country in earth permeates the very air they breathe. Foreigners are losers. Difficult to get them to really care about what happens abroad. Particularly if it's complex or lasts a long time.
