Science and maths, finance, politics, and I will like/share art until my fingers fall off. Sometimes obsess about weird bits of regulation. The RNLI are amongst the best of us. Would you like some solar panels? I know a guy. Opinions my own etc.

At some point we're going to have to get the advertising/data scraping industry under control. They're just making a mockery of everything now.

The industry association IAB Europe, which maintains a registry of approved ad vendors, apparently does not care at all who can participate in digital advertising in Europe. On Oct 8, it suspended ad-based spyware facilitator Discover-Tech. That same day, it approved another 'ad' firm linked to it.

Remembering my dear friend BERNIE WRIGHTSON on what would’ve been his 78th birthday. Everyday I’m reminded how great and talented he was by his original art I’ve hanging all over my studio walls. A constant source of inspiration. Buon Compleanno, brother, I miss you 🖤

Wow. Democracy for Sale nominated for *two* British journalist awards, for our investigations into Slapps and into Palantir Incredible to see a newsletter that’s barely three years old getting so much recognition Huge thanks to all our supporters!! 🎉

Very happy with the new details of the Warm Homes Loan Scheme. I may live up to my bio tomorrow and do a thread on it as it relates to solar PV and batteries. But for now: sleep.

Extremely funny to go "I can't believe the Poles didn't insitute reforms that would have upset Moscow" with a header image of What Happens When You Upset Moscow

Jacobin@jacobinmag.bsky.social

In October 1956, a protest movement in Poland brought a reform-minded communist leadership to power. Unlike Hungary, Poland managed to avoid Soviet intervention, but the opportunity to democratize its political and economic structures was missed.

This is another downside of there being too much money in politics. Political campaigns should be able to afford maybe 2 or 3 leaflets covering their core messages over the course of an election season. This is excessive.

Wait...Argentina is *not* providing safe haven to undesirables? Not to be too optimistic, but maybe redemption is possible for them after all. Maybe. Possibly. Milei being an opportunistic huckster might, oddly enough, end up saving Argentina. Or he could damn them. We'll see, I suppose.

João Bosco Jardim@jbjardim.bsky.social

According to the Argentine press, the fugitive Bolsonaro Jr is on board a plane that has been barred from taking off from Missiones airport, on Argentine territory.

You know what's really funny? This sinks the back up plan the US techbroligarchs had for when the torches and pitchforks come for them. Thiel, in particular, was noted to have been getting involved in Argentina recently. Not many other places they could hide. Maybe SEA?

If anyone knows the Owner of that Byron Wan account IRL, please let them know that their account has been hijacked and is currently running a crypto-scam.

I am going to be unapologetic in my "this agrees with me and therefore is immutable truth"-ness. We should renationalize the water system. I like this chap's take on even the creditors being due £0, but I will settle for giving them a small portion of what can be clawed back from TW shareholders.

🎵It's always a good day when we get to talk about Reform UK's finances🎵

Max Colbert@mc00.bsky.social

The Independent has released an "exclusive" on the "true scale" of Reform UK's overseas donations. I've reported on this extensively for two years, but others have tackled it in various ways since Nick Sommerlad and I first broke the tax-haven links scoop in 2024: www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

I haven't had time to read this yet, but I was listening to some former (US) intelligence people discussing this case a while back. One of them pointed out that bailing those guys so quickly was likely because the police/MI5(or etc) were looking to see who would and wouldn't contact them.

Robert Wright@reporterrwright.ft.com

Wondered what the police had to say about the curious handling of the September 27 RAF Fairford incident? My story about today's first charges has now been updated with a police statement acknowledging the handling might "appear illogical" but defending it: www.ft.com/content/7128...

I don't play a lot of games these days, but enjoying the designs and images coming out of Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Reminded me of this old drawing.

I would also very much like the AI spammers to stop. We're not buying a website that looks awful that you vibecoded in 5 minutes for the same price that we can get a proper website. We are also not interested in your fake leads.

The amount of work that arrived over the weekend has me feeling a touch overwhelmed. Not even sure where to begin. If I owe you some form of email or phone call - sorry. I might get to it by Christmas 2038.

First time I've done anything like this and I'm obviously bad at cutting etc. but generally speaking, do we think this is too TikToky? A lot of stuff is moving and there are images which I think makes it easier to watch for normies but perhaps I've overdone it? Let me know

Had to put my anger about Trump somewhere so I made this video about Ukraine, Putin and international politics more generally. No guest, basically just a Twitter rant with visuals: youtu.be/cIzqXP2UQSo?...

Excellent day to not be a nationalist dickhead. Most days are, tbf, but today was better than average. That said, I'm under no illusions that either Lula or the new Serbian gov't are going to live up to any expectations greater than "isn't a fascist" and/or "aren't Putin apologists".

Missing Galem and Shades, I found this old little snippet from when Shades (Galem's raccoon familiar) gained ‘speak with master’ 🦝😨 #OCart #OCsky #pf1e hehe

I continue to think that the obsession with the UK "committing" to join the Euro is pro-Rejoin wrecker behaviour. Sure, a new country has to 'commit' to join it but it doesn't automatically happen. There are all sorts of requirements and one of those is that gross gov't debt has to be <60% of GDP

View full thread

Expressed differently, a currency crisis in one MS could become an inflation/cost of living issue for the whole block. Having the GBP helps prevent that. Secondly, the UK could, if it so wanted, take it's newfound currency strength and just buy French bonds thus acting as a stabilisation mechanism.

But all of this is whatever. The hard fact is that committing to joining the Euro and actually joining the Euro are two separate things and there's really no reason to believe the UK would ever actually join the Euro.

Who honestly thinks the UK is ever going back to having gross gov't debt of less than 60% of GDP? The UK will never join the Euro and will never be required to join it because that would require a treaty change. Additionally, it is *in the EU's interests* to keep the GBP around.

Just take the current moment, the GBP is riding high because it has become a haven trade. Meanwhile, French bond yields are screaming towards space. If the GBP isn't there, firstly the currency trade possibly moves to a country that the EU imports more from resulting in an import cost increase.
