As anyone with eyes or a brain can see, this is just dark sarcasm - “You’ll be fine, just be one of the good ones” - rather than some kind of commitment to sending people to camps. Also, this is insane. Having every word picked over for the next set of rhetorical crimes for which I must repent.

It all feels so very Soviet show trial. You can never be acquitted. Your attempts to defend yourself or just casually talk about the subject will be scrutinized, and something will always be found, for your next thoughtcrime requiring your denunciation and rehabilitation. It goes on forever.

“You used the word community wrong.” “Are you sure you’re the right person to make that joke?” “Your job is to listen and learn and reflect.” Meanwhile no one can identify any core offense and they get angry when you ask what it is. They’re not here to educate you.

"You need to be better at taking criticism" but the criticism is just that they heard you had bad vibes

The very easy critique here is you should avoid making tasteless jokes about a community you aren't part of, and if you do make one instead of getting defensive about it, actually listen to the people it impacts and apologize. It's allyship 101.

Endlessly demanding that our good faith straight allies grovel for forgiveness for fake transgressions that toxic assholes in the ✨🌈Queer Community🌈✨ invented because they want to exert power over well meaning straight people is how we end up with fewer allies.

If someone stops being an ally because a queer person said their shitty joke sucked on the internet, they were never an ally. If you're making jokes about a community you aren't a part of, you need to be open to the fact that they might not land and that it's fine to say "Sorry, my bad".

You actually do not have to apologize to the bad faith assholes who apply the maximally uncharitable interpretation to every single thing you say and do, even if those assholes have marginalized identities.

Counterpoint: it was a bad joke in poor taste, and a good person would apologize for that. Will Stancil is not normal, and will never apologize for being shitty.

People have lost the ability to dislike something, shrug, say to themselves "I didn't like that thing", and move on.

Or if someone is offended, just apologize and move on, and maybe accept the possibility they may not feel safe in spaces with you there🤷🏽‍♀️

Yeah I think Will could’ve avoided all of this if he’d just said “whoops my bad, sorry about that.” But for some people, Will included, admitting error and apologizing for it is a psychic wound they can’t endure. Or something, IDK, he’s always weirdly argumentative about everything.
