This law is intended to make it easier to find pet-friendly housing by making it illegal for landlords to limit the breed and/or size of pets that can live in their properties. It will have the opposite effect as landlords adopt blanket "no pets" policies.

I'm squishy when it comes to dogs, I sympathize with the supporters here and waffled over this bill when it was first introduced. But give it just a moment's thought and it seems obvious to me: Landlords who say small dogs are OK will just say no dogs are OK. www.wusa9.com/article/life...

While I sympathize with the intentions here, it seems obvious to me that if allowing pets at all means landlords have to allow someone to have a 150+ pound English Mastiff in their studio apartment (with strict limits on pet deposits and pet rent) then landlords are just going to ban pets entirely.

Good intentions are not enough. You need to make good policy that actually solves the problem you're trying to address without creating worse second-order effects.

I have complicated feelings about no weight limits bc the larger the dog the deeper the claw gouges etc. I say this as a large and small dog owner. You’ll find big dogs that are gentle, but give one who’s not 5 min and that’s a $ refinish of the floor and you can only do so many times w/o replacing.

I had a 45 lb dog gouge the enamel of a century-old cast iron tub (my own) bc he didn't want a bath. Well within reason to set a limit.
