I extremely do not need a human to be driving my burrito taxi.

β€œI don’t want AI to replace artists and writers” is a humanist sentiment but β€œI don’t want robots to replace delivery drivers” just comes across as regressive to me.

The problem with these things is that they are a poor use of already limited pedestrian spaces in cities. People stepping into the street to pass them, etc

I envision companies viewing bike lanes as places where things like this will stop and I'm not a fan of that. If they can sort it out where people aren't hanging out in rider's way then πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I don't understand how we can argue for replacing jobs with robots while ignoring the fact that we're taking salaries and replacing it with nothing. The end game here is massive unemployment and poverty. It is a very very bad idea.

Max, I appreciate many of your posts and this is an unexpectedly sarcastic reply. We can accept and welcome progress and be concerned about the workers impacted by that progress at the same time.

I think we should have a robust social safety net to take care of people who lose their jobs. I do not believe that we should do luddite job protectionism for food delivery drivers. There is plenty of other work to be done.

Can we just not have any kind of burrito taxi? I think the world was better off when there were only 3 kinds of food delivery: pizza, Chinese & Indian. Everything else you should have to leave your apartment to go get. None of us starved and the streets weren't blocked by double parked Doordashers.

This is the way. Most foods don’t even travel well! There’s a reason these were the delivery options!

I got same feeling about Doordash as I do about Uber. The drivers aren't independent contractors- they're employees. And should be provided all the benefits and subject to all the rights and attendant regulations of being employees.

i think it's been reported that they're paying computer operators in south asia to drive your burrito taxi. so they're not robots. they're just underpaying human workers.

YIMBYS are a big tent. Alt-center YIMBYs would abolish rent regulations immediately if they could based on charts that say it's better in the long term. The charts are likely right in the long term, but in the medium term it'd fuck a lot of renters. Automating food delivery is similar.

And cites get to choose the terms of use for their sidewalks. So a rich corporation that wants to drive robots on them for profit and nuke hundreds of jobs in the process can in fact be told "no".
