It’s also a lot less hassle to ride the elevator to the top of Macy’s than to schlep up to Napa

To equal the median cost of a table for two at French Laundry ($1,250), a couple at Cheesecake Factory would have to order: 2 Pretzel Bites, 2 Chicken Madeira, 2 Parmesan-Herb Crusted Chicken, 2 Thai Stir-Fried Noodles, 2 Steak & Eggs, 2 Monte Cristos, 12 cocktails, and 49 slices of cheesecake.

Reddit breaking markdown has to be the dumbest, most pointless enshittification yet, right? Up there with Apple making the address bar stupid in Mac Safari

name one thing that tampa did for the world. You can not

A few years later a friend who was on that trip got married in Ybor City. THAT was a fun weekend in Tampa. I got so hopped up on cigars and Cuban coffee.

Incredible things (Alfred quoting their .net Bluesky account from their .com Bluesky account with more details on a truly ridiculous housing situation) are happening in Berkeley, California.

Alfred Twu@alfredtwu.com

We all had a "what?" moment when we got the details of this case. Tenant in a rooming house accidentally went to the wrong door and found his key opened his neighbor's bedroom door, tenants later found out that each tenant's key could open any bedroom's lock in the building.

Steve Earle's Dixieland is also a perfect way to consume the concentrated feeling of this part of Gettysburg if you don't have time to watch the whole thing at any given moment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=z63w...

Watched Gettysburg for probably the fiftieth time, but my first in a while, and the whole storyline with Chamberlain and the 20th Maine is just the most goddamned inspiring thing, it holds up beautifully, what a performance

I figure I’ll probably be in the market for an air conditioner at some point in the next couple decades, and it sure would be cool if it were cheap and environmentally friendly. Also, like 100M Americans will need one before me, so

Good, concise summary on the R290 situation. Opaque industry regulatory bodies are holding back a safe option that should let us heat and cool our homes more efficiently

You need to look at the whole block. With two-stair requirements, the entire block is going to be one building with two stairways, each down a long hallway from people’s apartments. With single-stair, the block can have half a dozen buildings, each with a staircase right outside people’s front doors

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

C: more on Grenfell. It's an example of a single stair. originally 2-stairs. Through de-regulation, reduced to one stair. DEREGULATION!!! I see single stair movement as "endemic of deregulation," trading safety for deregulation.

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

"Without true data, it makes our job hard to make good decisions... need good scientific research... right now we are working off anecdotal evidence and emotions... what is the right height and protections?"

This is a funny contrast to draw with the totally vibes-based existing code development process

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

Chris: "you're going to get emotions involved. That's what has been involved. anytime you have emotions involved, you have legislators involved. So instead of going through code process, which is tried and true, proponents have taken a new tact, which is concerning to me."

It’s super weird that his relatable moment is him talking about how he can’t handle the responsibility of driving a car.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "I've not seen a single shred of evidence that Donald Trump participates or sanctions in that corruption ... I've not once seen evidence that Donald Trump has enriched himself"

The press should ask him why, if he struggles to handle that responsibility, as he unpromptedly admitted, he thinks he’s qualified to be the Vice President of the United States.

I think it would be fun to watch a football game in a bar with this guy

Trust me: whatever you’re doing right now is less important than watching this candidate interview. No spoilers, just trust:

Good morning @rollovereasy.org. The sun is setting too early these days, in my humble opinion. But the sun is also rising in the morning too early. That’s why I propose that this fall, instead of falling back like usual, we instead spring forward again and make daylight EXTRA savings time.

I've long had an intuition that impact fees are counterproductive because of the way they preserve below-market Prop 13 tax assessments. Nice to see research that backs that up -- and finds even more harms.

Nick Erickson @nserickson.bsky.social

Do Impact Fees Do More Harm Than Good? Lessons From Calif: Park fees sit unused. Traffic mitigation fees don’t mitigate traffic. Affordable housing fees make housing less affordable. They are net-negative for city budgets in the long run. publiccomment.blog/p/do-impact-...

I’ve been working on single stair reform for years. HAC sponsored a bill in Sacramento this year and we’re honoring leaders from Culver City on Single Stair reform. Any framing that this is single stair reform in SF is factually inaccurate. @jkdineen.bsky.social
