The California Insurance Commissioner’s choices affect every homeowner and driver in the state. Jane Kim is an incompetent political climber who would blow up California’s already-in-crisis insurance market if elected. It is VITALLY IMPORTANT that every Californian vote for Ben Allen.

In my opinion, progressives like Sanders should not be endorsing hardcore NIMBYs like Kim. And hardcore NIMBYs like Kim should not be allowed to call themselves progressives.

God, I remember talking with a Jane Kim supporter who tried to be like "OH, YOU DON'T THINK SINGLE PAYER FIRE INSURANCE SHOULD BE A THING?! DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD PAY MORE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE TOO JUST BECAUSE THEIR LIFESTYLE IS UNHEALTHY?" as some sort of gotcha.

And like, yes? I think any form of M4A is a nonstarter unless we tax the ever loving shit out of things like cigarettes, alcohol, and base jumping. People who make deliberate choices within their control to risk their health *should pay more*. Just like people who choose to live in kindling.

Home insurance and health insurance are very different! Charging people with family histories of cancer higher health insurance premiums is unfair because they did not choose their genetics. People very much do choose where they live. It is fine to price fire risk to encourage less-risky choices.

The scary thing is that the insurance market is blowing up, even if she doesn't get to implement any of her bad ideas (likely). We need a competent person!
