Haha the units button transforms muscovado sugar and black treacle into their American counterparts. Reminds me of how it is such a pain on Linux to get 24 hour time, but US date format. I want my dark brown sugar to be measured in grams pls! 😅

Didn't know this was illegal lol

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

On Tue., Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. ET, I'm presenting my IBC proposal to a committee work group (one of many) to allow elevators to open into exits if dwelling units are also allowed to open directly into them. Essentially it would remove the "corridor penalty" for adding an elevator to a single-stair...

I feel so represented and seen with that hat

Lula@lulaoficialbluesky.bsky.social

I got a Wikipedia donation mailer, like they're Amnesty International or something. But it did point out they have an Android app and it is actually great. I love wasting time on it.

my cheesecake factory observation is that it is pretty pricey, but everyone dresses causally. It is setup for your date night but it doesn't seem to get treated that way. Maybe bc going there and only eating cheesecake is a very valid and then not really that expensive (esp $/calorie)

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

most cheesecake factory locations are in democratic-voting areas of the country. a big success story for the power of dense urban agglomeration opening up high quality consumer niches

the SF cheesecake factory is a good low energy date night since it's at the top of Macy's, nice view. And to @mtsw's point it must be in of the bluer parts of a blue city. But it doesn't have the high ceilings so lacks the full architectural experience Obama is talking about.

From the producers of "the TLS key is four"

Alfred Twu@alfredtwu.com

We all had a "what?" moment when we got the details of this case. Tenant in a rooming house accidentally went to the wrong door and found his key opened his neighbor's bedroom door, tenants later found out that each tenant's key could open any bedroom's lock in the building.

It's hard to tell when Musk is being delusional vs when he is lying. I guess this is what the You Can See Everything is about. It's both and neither and the wrong question.

Toby Buckle@polphilpod.bsky.social

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

Did he think the USAID was funding a network of fake protestors and by dismantling it the US liberal establishment would fall apart? Yes, no, of course

The demons in the anime Frienen use language to get what they want and it doesn't even occur to them that they'd use language to convey what they're thinking. That's what these guys always remind me of.

Classic pedocon moment, defending pedos is such a kneejerk reaction they can't even tell when they're doing it

This is so real

AI coding's asserted productivity improvements don't show up in the toplevel metrics. Our research team has found that this is because all of the productivity gains have gone to patching prod after the daily batch of CVEs

Now that they don't need to even implicitly pay for it via labor costs they can have as much deadheading as they want.

David Zipper@davidzipper.bsky.social

Waymo really seems to have a deadheading problem. In California: "Between January 2025 and June 2026, Waymo's deadhead share [of VMT] fell from 53% to 41.9%, yet still exceeds human-driven ride-hailing by more than 50%." More deadheading --> More traffic Preprint: doi.org/10.21203/rs....

Though my most pro-Waymo take is that they should be sold as much curb parking space as they want. Anything is better than private car storage lol.

"regret" just went through the Wiktionary page to make sure there wasn't an obscure usage I was missing. I think it's just super passive aggressive diplomatic speak not a European english-ism (apparently regret means the same thing in French even).

Ursula von der Leyen@vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu

We deeply regret the ratification today by the Libyan Parliament of the so-called Libyan-Türkiye Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea.

Imagining a guy on the ISO C++ committee complaining things are too technical. Why are these guys controlling our building code?

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

"We have to cover a variety of topics whereas our proponents get to be experts on one topic." Robert's personal story about this [again, like this is group therapy] In CA, we lobbied against and defeated 6 stories statewide. They backed down and it became a study.

Private standard committees work well enough for USB and HDMI, but for some reason it's a total joke for building codes

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

This thread is a pretty sobering look into how the building code sausage gets made in the US. We really need the public sector to impose some actual rigor and cost benefit analysis on this process.

In Claude's defense they were already like this

rain 🌦️@sunshowers.io

This is a researcher at Anthropic. Some of these people have lost their minds! What is mainlining Claude all day doing to them?

The correct move for CEQA is to repeal it and the "public interest lawsuit" system that empowers judges to make policy decisions. Replace it with a regulatory system to achieve our policy goals. But the Prop 45 drafters are A) idiots and B) central valley sprawl developers.

Clara Jeffery@clarajeffery.bsky.social

As someone who thinks we need to reform CEQA, this was my read of Prop 45, also. Some parts are good, some bad, some uncertain. Esp as it is a check on terrible Trump actions, this is not the way or time to mess with it. www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/edit...

There's no world where the central valley sprawl builders would see eye to eye with Greenbelt Alliance, their goals are directly opposed. But the fact that they made it an anti-HSR measure shows what idiots they are. They could've built a broader coalition with a prop that wasn't so MAGA chud coded.

is this the first time supporting a war has become a liability immediately? The war had to be so stupid for this to happen

Metrolink would like to remind citizens to return home after work and stay there.

Californians for Electric Rail@calelectricrail.org

Less than half of Metrolink riders are commuters. Less than 1/3 of commuters ride all 5 days a week. So why are Metrolink member agencies slashing weekend service and hell-bent on returning to commuter schedules? calelectricrail.org/metrolink-an...

They designed for double stack freight clearance too iirc lol Consultants have their place, but early HSRA should be in textbooks for CYA consultants running amok

David Ciani@davidciani.com

The early CHSRA didn’t really know what it was doing. Basically when they did it the first time, the authority told the engineers to set the knobs at 250 mph and typical “American” railroad grades (1.5-2%), and to find the best route given those criteria.

I like billionaires funding public orgs like UC instead of private non-profits. (Phoebe Hearst > Leland Stanford) But messy props like this are a good example of the benefits of the legislature writing the laws. 😅
