This story is about the tiny minority of tenants who oppose the city’s plan to replace their crumbling old buildings with new ones—with zero tenant displacement!—because they want the city to spend money it does not have and will not get to renovate the old buildings instead.

The New York City Housing Authority has a seventy eight billion dollar maintenance backlog. Nobody quoted in opposition to the redevelopment plan has a credible plan to finance those repairs while keeping the existing buildings in place.

Anyway, occasional reminder that attempting to get NYC tenant activists to explain how they would actually pay for the NYCHA’s maintenance backlog produced the classic “white ways of knowing and being” tweet.

Require 10,000 hours of non-academia labor prior to enrollment in a social science PhD challenge.

That one always baffled me because I'm pretty sure budgeting is not some sort of characteristically white thing to do. Pretty certain that if you want to maintain apartment buildings in like, Lagos or New Delhi or something you do need to pay people money to do it.

Decolonization is not a metaphor. It is not vibes, papers, or essays. It's when you stiff your contractors like Donald Trump did, but leftistly.
