That policy outcome you want is downstream of good land use policy and housing affordability.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

The Plot to Enslave America. Trump and Musk are the most powerful enemies of our free speech rights in our country's history

Kevin Collier @kevincollier.bsky.social

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

The Mississippi AG says police are justified for killing a baby because someone thought his mother shoplifted diapers that she paid for. The police have refused to release body cam footage. Fuck everything about this story.

Alameda has tons of old homes and it is a point of pride that we don’t indulge in Mills Act nonsense.

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

Every time I learn about a Mills Act tax exemption in Berkeley I become incandescent with civic rage. $37k per year subsidy to this 7,700-square-foot mansion that occupies 4 parcels.

Huge YIMBY win at the CNN Talarico town hall tonight: asked about lowering housing costs, Talarico touts his work on single-stair reform! "Our outdated buildings didn't allow for single-stair housing, which is smaller apartments, smaller condos. It’s a great entry point for homeownership."

I love taking the train between San Diego and Los Angeles since it's such a gorgeous view but there's just no way it'll still exist on the same track a generation from now. www.instagram.com/reels/DeSCAh...

Good on Andy Beshear, seriously. This is good. But let’s not pretend he doesn’t need something besides being good for all time zones to get Democratic primary voters to get excited about. Gavin, conversely, needs to convince people he didn’t just emerge from the Folsom Street Fair.

Love the California ballot system. Does it produce good law? No. Does it reduce the power of special interests? Think again. But is it better for outcomes? Shut the fuck up it’s time to talk dialysis.

Every so often Trump has an actually amusing, human seeming self deprecating riff and then resistance Sky is like: “We got him!”

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "I was playing golf and we had hundreds of Secret Service all over the course. In fact, they said, 'Does Trump cheat?' I can't cheat. You have 250 Secret Service agents running down. It's not that I wouldn't cheat, but you can't move the ball."

Mixed use developers often only care about the residential to make money. The commercial component doesn’t help the pro forma, so they just build the minimum shell and let it rot unless some megacorp can figure it out. Market wants many small commercial units, builders don’t provide that.

Not for the five stories of residents that now have to commute from Antioch.

Peter Gleick@petergleick.bsky.social

I tried to ignore you, but your persistent misrepresentation of my position demands a reply. I /support/ the BART redesign but not the old 12-story monstrosity, as did the community, and the current proposal doesn't have it: a good example of successful community input leading to a better outcome.

The Bay Area Bluesky dogpile on this quintessential Berkeley hypocritical NIMBY demonstrates that this site has the juice.

Of course the climate scientist against bike lanes has a home value 4X their prop. 13 assessment. They even have the crazy curbside EV charger to power their Tesla. Very tiny number of those ever put in. It's the definition of a homeowner who thinks they own the spot in front of their house.

As a Berkeley High graduate, I can say with authority that there is no more Berkeley of a person than a climate scientist who is anti bike lane and pro parking.

Peter Gleick@petergleick.bsky.social

A. It's a small parking lot & usually full. B. The bike lane doesn't go to the school unless it was another block south. C. Most shoppers buy far more than an ebike carries, are elderly, or come a far distance. D. Literally the only beneficiaries are a small # of bikers. No one else in the community

Been rewatching Deadwood and it's amazing that 20 years ago, you could see things in scenes that took place at night. Would be cool to recover that lost technology for television shows.

The new CDC Director is indeed the one who ordered the count of measles deaths to be changed from 2 to 0. “The highly unusual decision departs from the agency’s practice of including such data from state health departments, which historically make the determinations”.

This is baseball bat material.

I, for one, have mixed feelings about the electrification of our vehicle fleet. It's obviously necessary, but it should not come at the expense of pedestrian safety.

The building code should be written by bureaucrats and debated by politicians. Outsourcing this to a private trade group with parochial interests makes it harder to solve our biggest problems.

Patrick Siegman@siegman.biz

What share of architecture programs require students to pass an economics class to graduate? I ask because this story profiles the architect who just persuaded the ICC to ban windowless bedrooms in its model building code. It offers zero consideration of how this will affect building costs or rents

Why legalize enough housing construction to make the city broadly affordable when instead you can come up with bespoke BMR solutions for preferred classes of people and then require potential tenants to prove they belong to X preferred class www.sfchronicle.com/entertainmen...

People visiting Silicon Valley: Where are all the futuristic skyscrapers?! Louise in Willow Glen: "they are building a second story in our neighborhood with no input!!"

I feel like this might have been out of pocket. But I don’t care. I’m tired of people demanding their community be frozen in amber to sustain their fetish for Life The Way It Used To Be. I used to be 25. That’s not coming back either.

Why would El Cerrito "give away" $3.6M of theoretical public benefits to a developer so they can build 248 units of housing? Say it with me. Because THE HOUSING IS THE PUBLIC BENEFIT.

Rebecca Saltzman@rebeccaforec.bsky.social

El Cerrito staff are proposing that for these four projects we: Decrease inclusionary in-lieu fee to 25% of regular fee, Decrease open-space in-lieu fee to 25% of regular fee, And exempt them from transportation impact fee. We're hopeful that the changes make the projects financially viable.
