personally I think it's a very big deal that the Canada bureau chief for the @nytimes.com — certainly one of the highest-paid journalists in the country — asked an unspecified "AI tool" what Poilievre said & published its AI-hallucinated quotes in her reporting.

the fundamental job of journalism is to report facts & uphold public trust, which is rapidly eroding. brushing off the careless use of AI to spread misinformation shows why that is. this kind of conduct needs to be treated as a serious violation & called out as absolutely unacceptable.

I miss having a real media critic in this country because many of my peers are probably afraid to publicly denounce this crazy behaviour & get blacklisted from the NYT but I personally do not care 😎 I already have a job at a media outlet with ethical standards around reporting.

Not to dismiss the reporters laziness; but I was under the impression that the times fact checked their reporters work before publishing. Historically they prided themselves on their rigorous fact checking, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Thank you for this rant. Enemies of courageous, diligent journalism will surely jump on any incident of lazy, irresponsible AI use to try to discredit the noble profession.

I'm reading the policy as they don't have an end to end automated article generation process; and whoever's byline's neck is on the line, regardless of how their copy is produced. I suspect it's phrased the way it is to give the (false) impression no reporters dare use AI, because ppl don't like AI
