I heard stories of people who've fed crows, and been given gifts in return. It sounded charming, so I began doing that. Then, one night, there was a rapping on my bedroom window. I stumbled up and opened. A crow flew in and spoke: "They're coming for you. You must flee." I only just made it out.

Real talk: the crows that visit my backyard /still/ don't recognize that I am the human leaving food out for them and they don't need to flap away when I appear. The squirrels are way smarter. They just about climb up my leg looking for nuts.

If they're anything like ravens we have here, they know. I don't understand why, but the ravens will come and caw for food if it's not out. And afterwards sometimes just stay for chats. But when the food is out, they act like they're stealing it. To the point of pretending to ignore it if watched.

They don't mind us being close if there is no food, and when they're "stealing" the food, our proximity isn't the factor. It's whether we're watching. And they obviously know to look for us and caw at us if they want food, so they clearly know we get the food for them. Yet they insist on theatrics.

No the crows seem decidedly dumber than the other birds, even. The sparrows or mourning doves, et al, will fly to a safe distance when I am out putting out food. But they watch me the whole time and go to eat once I am back inside. the crows just flee for the hills and don't come back for hours.
