it's also weird to me because the appeal has always been a mixture of "wow this is cool" and "some madman did it" now the cool factor is heavily diminished because there are so many of these now, and it's not like there's any real technical skill behind any of them

like, i cannot emphasize how nutty unleashed recompiled was, and im sad that we will never get anything like it ever again

I recently finally got around to that. After years of loving Unleashed videos on YouTube during my childhood, finally having the chance to play it myself blew me away. This is what I live for. That hype isn't there anymore because chuds are using this recomp wave to claim 10 minutes of fame.

15 years of waiting until humans figured out how to bring that inaccessible game to a modern audience vs. a month or two seeing how many games that historically ran just fine via emulation are "ported" by the chuds. I guess that's a prime example of quality vs quantity.

Idk if you are familiar with the world of synthesizers but there‘s a cheap one called the M-Vave FM-1 that punches way above it’s weight and people started making custom firmware that completely transformed it. Super exciting! …then it hit me that they were doing it a lot very fast…yeah…all AI slop.

Shit deflated me so fast. It’s such an affront to the creativity we are capable of that so many spend years convincing themselves they don’t have. The creativity capitalism spends our whole lives telling us there’s no value in. It’s such a vile thing to me.

Gonna be pissed if a PS2 port of Mega Man 9 & 10 end up being an incomprehensible slop job, because it’s something i’ve wanted for a long time and it’s something that genuinely has utility (the PS2 was the last console still able to output 256x224, the internal resolution of Mega Man 9 & 10)

I said this a while ago. The human effort is specifically what made it cool, the average gamer has access to everything at all times. If you're already a fan of Mario Galaxy you're probably more likely to own a Wii or Switch than you are a PS2.

The novelty evaporates when you realize that, if you're specifically choosing to play a PS2 game, you're probably gonna wanna play something like Ape Escape or Ratchet and Clank that you can't play on a Nintendo console.

It's no longer "wow, someone managed to backport a Wii game code to the Jaguar", it's "someone told the butthole computer to reprogram the Wii game to the Jaguar" and that pisses me off so much.
