A few people are upset that I indicated I can identify AI and I actually don't believe I can identify AI text. But I can identify weird obsequious and incompetent pitches that have 5+ paragraphs of words that say nothing and somehow get the details wrong about a book they swear they loved.

I can also identify AI by how many times they breathlessly praise the books of the other author who shares my pen name while reaching me through a contact form embedded in my website where my books are there on the site and the other author's are not. We should trade each other's botmail sometime...

And honestly, you don't need to KNOW it's AI. If they write like a middle manager authentically and of their own hands and mind, that ain't someone you need to waste your time with either.

The reason I said we can recognize THESE pitches is because we all got roughly zero of these a few years ago and now we get dozens a day and they all sound identical and most are word vomit and are describing our books to us with incorrect details.

The reason I'm begging humans not to use AI is not because we are rejecting these pitches because we think they are AI. Whether they are AI is a secondary problem to whether or not we want to do business with someone who sounds this incompetent. We don't! AI makes you sound incompetent!

They also just...summarize the book akin to a goodreads summary *despite speaking to the author who obviously knows all this*. Like yeah, no shit Dance of Chaos is about an assassin named Haern, I wrote it. It so obviously reeks false, and is painful to read.

in fairness, if I were ever to cold-email an author and was saying I'd loved their work, I'd want to include some kind of proof that I had, in fact, read their work. However I suspect I'd be able to do better than "an LLM read the title and maybe the goodreads summary" levels

Over the past six months my mom's gotten two pitches related to her decades-old academic book. One was real, the other was fake. We could tell the difference!

I occasionally get them for Connie Willis via the social media accounts I run for her. The most recent one was for a completely different author of a non-fiction science book. They claim they are a "Book Marketing, Author Visibility, and Discoverability Specialist.

There are books I love. Not only do I have opinions about them, I have strong and specific opinions about them. They will be annoying - but authentically humanly annoying.
