After finishing the Astral Kingdoms, I wanted to write something much smaller, more intimate. Something where the stakes are personal and quiet compared to killing gods. I also wanted to make people cry. VOW OF ASHES, a novella of a dying woman and the vow she demands of her husband, is that book.

Weapons was last night's movie night. Really enjoyed the format and the mystery, as well as the complete commitment to the premise. Forgot to say we watched the original Scream last week, continuing the horror stuff. Honestly, it held up pretty well, though a lot of the stereotypes no longer hold.

This is no hyperbole. So, so many of my author friends adore Dragon Age and Mass Effect (myself included).

I don't think readers understand how much influence Bioware has had on authors in the last twenty years. We owe Bioware so much. No Dragon Age means no body horror means I don't write body horror into my work, for example.

Complete and total waste of history, expertise, and memorable franchises. Absolutely infuriating.

Someone saying you can't reject these podcast/book tour emails because you can't 100% know they're AI written must be shocked at how many single women in their area stumbled onto their dating profile and want them to see their photos.

"Collin glared at one of the nearby instructors who was nearby." These are the things you find when editing that make you want to consider a new career.

"She found herself intensely disliking its intensity". Good job, writer David. Excellent work. I see why you're a pro.

This is the part that feels like going insane daily. "lol oh no we can't stop our product from doing crimes aren't we cheeky?" FUCKING JAIL FOR THE CEO THEN

Micah@rincewind.run

if your agents are going to commit crimes, you are legally responsible if you cannot figure out how to prevent your agents from doing crimes, you’re going to have to choose between releasing them and protecting yourself from criminal liability imo this would do more for “ai safety” than a sex cult

I would be EXTREMELY annoyed to discover my PR is "AI"-generated, and as someone bombarded with dozens of "AI"-generated emails daily, I assure you the stink of "AI" is immediately noticable and immediately dismissible. Publishers are not doing their new books any favors in using it.

For @wired.com, I spoke with workers about the quiet push to experiment with AI tools from book publishing executives at the Big Five. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

If anyone's doing this to my books - hey good for you, cool, can I see it?

I had a dream that someone had done a graphic novel of one of my books but they turned it into porn

the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

Writer David is a lazy weirdo who gets to do whatever the fuck he wants. Editor David is a cranky old man trying to make it all make sense and spends a lot of time mumbling angry words about Writer David.

It's done. My 37th novel, a project whose name isn't even revealed yet, is done.

If I don't procrastinate, I should finally finish Unannounced Project today. Putting this out there to guilt/shame myself into actually doing it.

3k. It's the chapter that never ends (probably because it's the massive climactic fight I put off writing until the very very end so it's kind of my fault, but STILL)

Hrm, I remember seeing a list being shared of a bunch of confirmed no-ai artists and whatnot. Does anyone have a link to that? Trying to buy some decorations for the house and avoiding AI shit on Amazon is getting nightmarish.

Just got a video ad talking about how data centers don't actually use a lot of water and they use even less water once built and they're innovating to use even less water over time, so please don't be mad. The pushback is clearly getting to them.

Incredible. The video *did* have a bit talking about how they're re-using waste water, so it's kind of like recycling. It's all the same grift!!

(You need to read up the thread if you aren't an Atthis Arts/Emily Bell truther like myself.) what is even happening anymore

Jason Sanford@jasonsanford.bsky.social

In my original draft, the story closed with "… and, Brad, one day we’re going to escape. When we do you’ll be so screwed that your story will become the most viral post of all time." Emily Bell said "This is ok, but consider if you want to use a term with sexually violent implications." 11/

Man, the internet is going to become completely unusable if/when Reddit goes under. I can't count the number of tech issues I've solved from there alone.

If there's a power rankings of "people I'd be most terrified to be publicly destroyed by" gotta figure she's up near the top, along with the Menswear guy.

Not me, inventing a specific combat role as a 'Shield' for this new series, and then promptly forgetting to even give the first one the MC meets an actual shield to wield.

Discoverability for new SFF books seems way down these days, especially outside of bestsellers and certain subgenres. I'm noticing this as both a reader and a writer. Great stuff is in danger of sinking without a trace. Please post about new/recent books you love or are excited for!!! I'll start:

absolutely amazing chart

Phil Klinkner@pklinkne.bsky.social

I really love this chart. I'm guess that the correlation here (.85) is about as big as you would find for any other variable. Also, a less serious scholar than @tesler.bsky.social (namely me) would have made a crude Freudian reference to the slope of the line.

With no Pan's Labyrinth, started off the spooky horror month a little early and watched THE THING. Kiddos were rightfully freaked. Those practical effects are still bonkers.

I played this at school with an awesome teacher who pretended it was educational. We looked up a cheat guide to beat it, though, because once we did, our next up game was Warcraft 2.

Sweet bleeding Mithras y'all, I get being an unhinged Astarion fan, that is one messed up guy, I like him and I don't usually have time for vampires. But you do realize that he's, like, pretend?? And that someone can have a different take on who he is or his story, right?

Why is economic sentiment so low when GDP growth is positive? There’s no reasonable explanation, the only possible conclusion is that people are all just doing a mass hysteria (/s)
