It's an equal income FLOOR. Everyone is still free to earn more via their jobs and stuff. Alaska has had a small annual UBI since 1982. Works great. Lots of positive long-term outcomes.

I agree ubi is a temporary bandaid as well, but the point isn’t to impose an equal income on everyone, it’s to allow for an equal *minimum* income for everyone that isn’t tied to labor (this is what distinguishes ubi from a minimum wage). People could still earn more beyond the ubi.

Communism (as practiced in the real world) failed because of human greed. Much like capitalism is failing humanity due to human greed. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to counteract poverty. UBI literally saves lives, it's been proven time and time again all over the world.

Good point. What u am wondering out loud is how we stop or dissuade from greed. It is a basic human trait albeit, negative or progressive depending on which way you look at it.

Added it to my ongoing megathread. bsky.app/profile/scot...

Here's NPR's coverage of this new study showing how incredibly effective monthly cash programs can be for health and thus what we can expect from universal basic income. Millions of hospitalizations have been avoided in Brazil because of their Bolsa Familia program. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

Unconditional (Universal) Basic Income WORKS. We don't need more "studies." We need to implement. We live in a money-based society. Give everyone a floor of money so no one falls through the cracks into indignity. It's not a ceiling, people who worship hoarding can still work themselves to death.

Right, those are less "conditions" than agreed-upon criteria. When I use "Unconditional" as an alternative for Universal in UBI I'm speaking mainly to Americans who have a negative association with "universal" because of how that's been distorted by anti-healthcare ideologues.

Language matters. In choosing "Unconditional" to help describe Basic Income to people, I am very deliberately trying to get away from how "universal" has been watered -down and distorted in American thinking.

This, *but also,* when it is about food, water, clothing, shelter, income, healthcare, mobility/transport, self-expression, education: there's no "deserving" involved. We need to all get there. All those things (& more) are RIGHTS & as such should be free/at cost paid via taxes & not by end users.

It's not unexpected. It is the literal f****** point of giving people money. Yeah you give people money they'll live better lives. Some of that is not dying of cureable diseases Would you say being warmed by a campfire is an unexpected result?

"And it's through two prongs: One is making sure they get educated, they grow up healthy with access to health care. And then the second is giving the family money so that they can have better food or school uniforms." Seema Jayachandran professor of economics at Princeton University.

Uh, the article says that a requirement for receiving the money is that all children get vaccines and go to school. That would seem to be a big contributing factor in cutting TB rates.

No, I read it. Brazil is not America. Not even close. Medicaid cash is not new. PO folks love it. Dat's not right. Finding comfort in Enslavement is regressive. Exactly what happens. Why r Big Blacks so successful? THEY WERE NURTURED. U critics have nothing but goo for brains.

Great report. Bravo Brazil! This so should not be a surprise! Improvements in living conditions in US & Europe in first half of 20th C did as much—probably more—to reduce TB rates & deaths there than did antibiotics in the 2nd half.

UBI is proof of income inequality. Imagine basic standards of living improving generalizes to other disease as well. Idea:Progressive tax, all excess goes to UBI permanent funds. US government guarantees loans equal to excess tax of corporations. That's a win win real trickle. Invest=dragons.

Most suffering on your planet is due to intentional failures in resource allocation. Earth has a bounty plentiful for all, yet resources are hoarded by the few to the detriment of the many. It pleases us to see that some of you understand this and are working toward positive change.

As a surprise to no one, UBI is amazing and has more benefits than anyone can fill an exhaustive list with. However the billionaire class wants to continue being monarchs and hate their slaves, so it will continue to be hard to improve the lives of the poors (aka 99% of the planet).
