I'm no fan of Trump, but if you read the article, they're making the cuts because of corruption in the Zambian government. Medications donated for free end up being sold in pharmacies. They've repeatedly tried to get the government to stop the corruption but to no avail.

This is true, but there are ways to get medications & food bypassing the Zambian government. It's obvious this has been a problem for several generations, and this should've been called out.

Exactly. I deplore the US regime, but this has nothing to do with them. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if this regime decided to cut the funding immediately.

Nope. But I do tend to blame the current US administration for a hell of a lot of disasters. Primarily in countries, that USA used to support thru USAID and other entites. And the money for this ambassador still comes from that same administration. And where do this ambassador get his orders from?

Dang, I wish in situations like this we could make sure the drugs aren’t stolen or resold. So many people will be harmed. Michael Gonzales did the right thing it just sucks. He must be heartbroken given his dedication to the health of Zambian citizens. We can’t solve corruption unilaterally sadly.

Some of you clearly did not read the article. This is not a part of the USAID slashing. This appears to be more of a true case of finding abuse. I hope they can find a way to get the government to do more to make sure the medicine gets to the people in the way it was intended.

The problem off 🌍 are. The local governments are 90% ruled by tugs or 🇷🇺 backed thiefs. Who only has one goal get rich. So any help to 🌍 are to give money to the thiefs. To help 🌍 Don't send money, food, medicine they only sell it. Give them Education. And they can see by themselves who the thief are

This is so sad there are so many people in this world that try to get rich off the backs of workers, seniors, and the handicapped and our veterans. They come in many disguises, thieves, oligarchs, and political thieves. Old song: they treat us like mushrooms, feed us shit and keep us in the dark.

Please read the article, for a change this has nothing do to with the Trump administration (I'd say it's about the US and Zambia not being able to secure the drugs reach the intended people, but maybe that's too cynical)

Exactly... It's a thing to give meds to poor peoples but these meds being stolen and resold by actual pharmacies is the pinacle of being sinical... We can add to this some zambian official making a ton of money by this little bizzness.

For those who aren't reading the article: 2021 to 2023, they found that 95% of pharmacies sold stolen meds. 45% sold stolen meds from the U.S. April '24, they met with senior leaders in Zambia to try to address. Little to no action followed. 50M of 600M aid has been cut as a result.

Once corruption has become so pervasive in politics and government, it's hard to combat and root out. That may be the biggest message for the US in this outcome. The poorest and most vulnerable are the real victims. We are seeing that play out here with the Trump administration.

Are you saying the US should only donate life saving medicines to struggling countries that have eliminated all theft? That sounds like an impossibly high bar. A condition not even the US can even meet with all our militarized police.

United States of America has always been a country that although young, would and could come to the aid of people who live in countries that don't really care or know how to take care of their people. Our scientific community and our humanitarian community have provided knowledge and care to others😡

The paternalism is nauseating. “I’m sorry daddy has to punish you because you’re so bad” 🙄 the entire enterprise is designed to humiliate the global poor, meanwhile where did they even get $50mill? Arms trades? Sanctioning Zimbabwe? Jesus Christ

Trump ignores the Constitution, the law and the courts. He has empowered Fascist oligarchs to avoid taxes with impunity. Congressional Republicans routinely break the law to protect his ongoing criminal acts. Trump’s criminal Fascist, tariff, and crypto schemes have destroyed the American economy.

Everyone should read the article. Our foreign aide can be complex and sounds like they made a well thought out decision. You may or may not agree but at least it’s being implemented in an orderly fashion to minimize disruption. It’s the opposite of how the rest of administration is running things

Very appropriate. US actions all through have been right including the delay in implementation. Corrupt Zambian officials caused this. Zambia is known to have these issues and has not self corrected.

This brings me almost to tears. Corruption, unchecked greed, followed by tragedy seems to be the human race these days. Lack of fairness in resource distribution is a cause, but still it seems these traits are here forever.

The Embassador knows that without US aid, many of the babies will perish and die. The Whitehouse clan are doing the most cruel, inhumane, evil deeds, unimaginable to anyone!! This hurts the heart. Please pass message...

I know there is corruption in EVERY country ( right now, TRUMP, family, and his GOP is the MOST blatant example of pure greed and corruption ) and should be stopped. However, the saying " not to throw out the baby with the bath water " I believe applies here. Double down on security instead!

If every single dollar spent on war wasn't and anyone whoever made money off it was thrown into the ocean instead including you, the world would be so much better

Yeah, you're right. I'd only heard two. But now you can replace the 140 million in my post with 210 million, and its *still* off by 3 orders of magnitude. And f-18's get replaced with f-35c's, so the government is *already* paying the replacement costs regardless

So sad but when I lived in West Africa the markets were full of rice vendors. I used to laugh at the bags of rice which read “courtesy of Canada” and “UN World Food Programme.” Corruption is rampant in many places. I wish there was a way to stop it instead of punishing the locals who need help.

In 1990's USAID dumped millions of tons of grain Zambian. The grain was given to at the time the opposition fighting for democratic elections. Before then Zambia along with Zimbabwe were exports of grain grown locally. In an effort to export "democracy" which as a positive did come about...

However, the side effect of the democracy is the opposition party that did win those elections with the help of USAID turned out to be the most corrupt governments in our nation's history to date. They sold our mining industry for pennies on the dollar to American mining companies...

Dismantled the system of farming cooperatives that formed the bedrock of converting small scale farming into national producers producing enough to feed Zambia on the cheap and several other countries in the region and sold off national companies amongst them battery manufacturing...

I don’t think so. After reading the article, it seems it’s the Zambia government that is key. I base that on the Zambian officials not taking the US offer to help track the culprits.

wtf does this comment even mean? Do you really think it’s that simple? You don’t think there was any solution other than just “let everyone die”? Oh but we asked them to stop nicely! 🙄 I’m sure someone with a brain could have figured this out, if we could only elect one.

How awful for the poor in Zambia and just got wrenching for our ambassador. The global checks on the spread of HIV are falling apart. The pandemic that has never gone away, which was forced into epidemic status for a time, will come roaring back around the globe eventually.

Bless you, Ambassador Gonzales. We are crying here, too as the execrable Trump and his family enrich themselves by hundreds of millions of dollars via bitcoin schemes …. All while making lethal cuts to worldwide aid programs.

Corruption in many African countries is just status quo. We should not be supporting these criminal governments with our aid. So I laud the research/investigation beforehand & the chances given to correct theft. There must be a way to directly deliver relief to the ppl & bypass corrupt regimes.

This is a sad story - and it also a case for why we need to invest in expert and adequate staffing to do oversight of our funds - the rapid slash and burn cuts to USAID and international assistance have made it more likely that funds could be misspent, as they have decimated those capacities.

This Heartless embarrassing administration where cruelty is the point. People are dying because of this unconscionable action. The party that claims Christianity does nothing Christ like because to them Jesus was Woke. Hypocrites

But if it's medicine (no OxyContin) aren't the stolen drugs being used to treat people? Even if the thieves are selling the drugs that would have gotten to the patients for free, people are being treated. A sane policy would be to end the theft. What am I missing? This just kills more people.

It really sucks that the people who need this medicine for their very survival have been paying markups due to criminal resellers but that's still a better situation than not having any access to these lifesaving medicines AT ALL, which is what is about to happen with the aid cuts.

The USAID funding was known to be less vulnerable to theft because it was targeted at the private and non-profit ngo sectors, with high accountability. Which is why it is doubly tragic that USAID is being destroyed.

I read the article and have mixed feelings. I see shy they feel like they have to shut off the supply to the grifters. The drugs should be freely given. But also cutting off the supply will cause deaths. So which is more humane?

I agree. “Between 2021–2023, nearly half of 2,000 pharmacies were selling meds meant to be free, incl. HIV treatment. Despite informing the Zambian gov’t in April 2024, the U.S. saw little action.” Theft on this scale justifies withholding funds” That’s pretty egregious.

Read the article. They were given many chances to get their act together and avoid this cut. Unfortunately the most needy are always the ones to pay.

ITT: people who don’t read the article and are mad at imaginary events. Read the article, folks. It explains this is unrelated to Trump and has been happening since 2021. Not every bad thing is due to Trump; there are plenty of bad people out there.

It’s up to the Zambian government to protect it from theft, which they clearly were not doing. I’m sure there was a way to do so, but it doesn’t work if the people in charge won’t help

BS! We figure out how to get weapons of war all over the world every day w/o them being stolen. We also regularly figure out ways to get govts and regimes around the world to do what we want. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. This is a failure of will.
