With the growth of AI and the resulting loss of jobs, lower population growth may be sustainable with less social unrest if we can address the financial and healthcare needs of the rapidly growing elderly demographic.

That'll just be an unpleasant crunch. They should have reined in population growth before the baby boomers were born and it would have been a smoother, more pleasant ride back to a sustainable population level.

As one of a fistful of children I can say every child born is a gamble of adding to or detracting from society - and it literally takes a lifetime to find out which you perpetrated on the world. So, until an offspring has lived and died, you'll never know if they should've been considered 'excess'.

The economists need to come up with better systems that aren't unstable pyramid schemes dependent upon constant growth. One billion people on the planet, a healthy ecosystem, and a stable, non-growing economy = paradise.

Would be good if instead of rural communities dying natural deaths they got together to choose intentionally which ones others would move too. While deliberately choosing which ones to rewild.

I think giving those residents a choice to move to another rural community might be less stressful than moving to a big city. Having rural communities die without any sort of plan seems dumb to me. And if you got to choose where rewilding occurred maybe bison and other wildlife would benefit.

I recall a study I read, I think in the late 90s, that said family size tracks directly to the status of women. The better women's lives are in a society, the fewer children they have. Obviously, the study does not claim to predict the behaviour of any individual woman.

This is true. When given any choice at all, women usually choose to have one child (zero to three) because each child consumes huge amounts of a woman's resources, and frankly, they don't give much back. It's a high cost, low benefit venture, and one child is sufficient to satisfy mom instincts.

And generally speaking, the better life women have, the more likely their children are to survive into adulthood. So the instinctive pressure (species survival) to have lots of kids is that much lower.

Agree. It is a very unnatural social structure that the patriarchy has forced on society to the detriment of everyone except a handful of rich men. The rise of the billionaires is a natural part of the patriarchy. Humans appear to be matriarchial, as are most social mammals.

Pretty ironic given it wasn't long ago a number of people were panicking about over-populating the planet. Now we get to panic about an insufficient number of young people to take care of all us old folks.

We've built our entire economy and society on the notion that MORE (growth, taxable property, revenue, whatever) is good, but growth cannot be infinite and comes with its own ills (climate change, limited resources, etc.). We should be seeking SUSTAINABILITY instead.

Birthrates fall, the prophets cry, Fearing ghosts of days gone by. But fewer hearts may mean more air, Less hunger, noise, and blind despair. Still whispers grow of nations dying Hope replaced by endless spying. Not death, but fear, unreasoned, sly, Makes a paranoid world go dry. #Poem #paranoia

Not everybody wants to have children People that don’t want to have children that have children end up not being great parents Maybe it’s all of the estrogen we spray as a weed killer that’s reducing sperm counts and possibly affecting birth rates Notice they don’t talk about that

They want higher birth rates but also to replace workers with AI and robots but also wealthy customers for those $200,000-a-pop robots… Maybe these godzillionaires aren’t really the best and the brightest.

There is no damn shortage of children. They are EVERYWHERE! Every problem we currently have can be traced to overpopulation and competition for resources. I'm sure there is an overabundance of already born children needing homes.
