@npr.org "higher interest rates that investors are now demanding in order to keep lending the government money" You missed the opportunity to explain why they are demanding higher interest rates. Rising inflation, higher energy prices, and an unstable government led by an unstable leader.

Tell that to Trump and Republicans who have done more to drive up debt and deficits than dems ever did. Trump whining today about high interest rates, well one reason besides inflation, when Bessent jacks up rates on 10 yr bond yields so they sell at auction, it means higher 30 year mortgage rates.

If we want nice things we have to pay for it. You can't cut taxes on everyone and expect some trickle down BS to make more money. We can help the less well-off by reducing the small amount of taxes they pay but us middle-class people have to pay more, there are not enough millionaires and...

...billionaires to pay for our tax load even if we ramp up what they pay to prior levels. Progressives and ultra-libs may think the wealthy are an endless stream of tax income but they are not.

I disagree. Billionaires are an endless stream of tax income and if they & the corps they own were taxed appropriately then we could all have sensible nice things and they would have to learn to live in just one or two homes instead of private islands and super yachts.

They're not an "endless" stream of tax income. The US had a 7 trillion budget last year and Elon Musk just recently became a trillionaire. So Musk's fortune could only pay 1/7 of last years budget.

Some people will max out every credit card they can get, then wriggle, deflect, delay, and otherwise avoid paying back their debts. Which is Trump's lifetime MO. Then when you have government debt plus billions in tax and tariff revenue at your disposal, it's just like a massive credit card...

And then they became radicalised into #MAGA Trump lackeys and sycophants, promoting hypocrisy with no shame, no moral compass, no sense of integrity, no sense of honour or honesty, no sense of decency, no sense of duty toward country or ppl. #MagaTs in the US are a Cancerous rot destroying democracy.

Crazy idea, but maybe if we hadn't been on this path to continually cut tax rates for the very wealthy over the last 40+ years we wouldn't have this debt. History substantiates that. Reagan is the one who got us on this path, and the US debt crossed $1 trillion for the first time during his term.

Reagan and his admin. did a lot of damage on different issues. There were sources of the CIA "funnelling crack into black communities" making crack a higher mandatory minimum than cocaine (better known as the white man’s drug) and this system was to imprison POC supplying the penal labour industry

Sharing wealth ? Filthy communist ! Reagan was a symptom or a vehicule of a much larger social and economical issue than an individual mentality; the same can be said about Trump.

I hope everyone realizes that taxing billionaires more won’t be enough to fix this. We’ll all need to pay more in taxes and there will still need to be sizeable cuts in programs that benefit citizens across the financial and social spectrums.

No need to cut benefits, just make it financial expensive for companies that pay their employees so little they need the benefits. "Jon Doe, your part time employee, is on food stamps? We're charging your company 10x what he needs in food stamps." Companies would correct pay real fast.

Not a bad idea at all, but it’ll take a lot more than that to correct this deficit. The interest payments alone are over $1 trillion a year and our unbalanced budgets are putting us deeper in the hole by the day.

A logical place to start there is the military. We currently spent about $1T per year (Hegseth wants it to be $1.5T for 2027), while the next biggest spenders are China at $0.3T and Russia at $0.2T. We could save half a trillion and still be keeping up... more if we require them to pass an audit.

Those cuts can start with the mortgage interest deduction The child care deduction The comparatively cheap vehicle registration tax & property tax And that welfare program suburbanites pretend is a federal savings account... gone *cuz we all know what cuts you actually meant

I was thinking that the Social Security taxable amount needs to be doubled or tripled and they would probably still require benefits be cut, but am curious as to what you thought I was referring to. I really don’t believe anything is off of the table when it comes to taming the deficit.

This is very skewed, pro-austerity, reporting on the national debt. It's warmed over, thoughtless, conventional wisdom. It ignores the loss in tax revenues from tax cuts that mostly benefit the very rich & huge corporations. I left my chores to log my complaint. @deanbaker13.bsky.social

Capitalism at its finest. $40 trillion in debt. The 2008 economic collapse cost us $23 trillion. 14 wars during the past 40 years cost us $17 trillion. Now the MAGA'S are saying Democratic socialism is bad?
