There are already multiple reserve currencies in the global monetary system. The us dollar is the main one, but not the only one. The potential problem, long term, is it can make exports more expensive which unless china raises consumption and wages could cause problems for it over time

It already is, to some degree. Of course, yuan is not freely convertible, this is a problem. Also it is about the trust. If a country trusts China more then USA or EU - their choice...

The yuan is not a freely convertible currency. There are capital controls. As long as this remains the case, the yuan will not become a reserve currency.

Yeah. And currencies is about trust. Something the US dollar is losing, but that that the Chinese Yuan ia lightyears from attaining.
