The Canadian government celebrates the US committing the crime of aggression against Venezuela, in violation of international law and the UN Charter, even as it calls for respect for international law. I’m not surprised: Carney took a similar approach when the US illegally attacked Iran last year.

what about Trump's "brutally oppressive and criminal regime," Mark? got any condemnation for ICE raids, banning life-saving healthcare for trans people, conducting illegal foreign military strikes, enabling the looting of social security data by private individuals, etc...? what a spineless PM

This morning, Donald Trump invaded Venezuela, and THREATENED to invade Mexico and Colombia too. Canada has been living with an implicit threat of invasion for a year. No oceans between us and the monstrous dictator running the United States, and we've relied on them for protection for decades.

Total Misrepresentation by YOU! Reread Anand's statement carefully - THINK!! Clarity/support re rule of law & democracy in Venezuela! Careful to NOT invite Invasion of Canada by Trump!!

(1/n) I'm seeing a lot of people here trying to defend this. I get it, we're all scared, it would be nice if Carney was secretly working it all out like a chess game. But he isn't. When we fail to clearly stand up against precedents like this we make our position weaker, not stronger. When the PM

(2/n) is making mistakes, and worse yet being encouraged to relinquish what power we do have by corporate actors who's views align with Trump, this is not a time to say 'he must know better.' He doesnt. He's a banker, he's a fine man, but he's just a man. Our job as citizens is to call on him

(3/n) to actually stand up to the sort of voices who will try to undermine our sovereignty. This statement by the PM is a joke, it's weak, & we should not settle for it. Trump, if he respects anything at all, respects strength not diplomacy. So it's not even strategic to write a weak statement.

(4/4) as I wrote here this faith in the PM - like him or not - alone risks us handing over Canada to the U.S. slowly rather than quickly: open.substack.com/pub/energymi... The real factor that will save Canada is Canadians like you. The PM is just a means to an end. That's the point of democracy.

open.substack.comHow Donald Trump Will Come After Canada Next: With Corporate LobbyistsTrump aims to leverage private sector power over other nations, especially through the tech and oil and gas sectors that are at the centre of Canada's "nation-building" strategy. What could go wrong?

Respectfully, I disagree. Carney literally did not mention today's illegal actions by the US President. Blasting Trump would be satisfying and stupid. Canada is under threat of invasion since 1 year ago. Carney chose to focus on the sovereignty and democracy of the Venezuelan People.

We may already have French nukes on Canadian soil, that would never be announced, China is a tough nut. They view us as an American protectorate and if they didn't, I'm not sure it would be better. We are 41 million, and we defend 4% more land than 1414 million people.

Seems to be the standard Western response. EU, UK and Canada all saying much the same. "We won't miss Maduro. But we believe in international law. Message ends." Pretty weak.
