it’s so funny to see how anti-avi lewis the ndp talking heads are. his win might not be so great for their continued career prospects. as disillusioned as i am with politics rn (not to mention just generally exhausted), i do hope he can breathe some new energy into left-wing politics in canada

Unfortunately there is a lot of things stacked against Avi and NDP… very consolidated, billionaire owned media and undemocratic Canadian first past the post voting pushing smaller parties off the map.

Agree. I also hope he can figure out how to breathe new life into left-wing politics without filling my inbox with a bazillion NDP emails and my phone with text messages. I can't fathom that this approach to "organizing" is effective given how effectively it repels me...I can't be the only one!

This. Avi has actual leftist policies and a vision. I think the NDP are doomed no matter what, so I’d much rather they be an actual socialist party instead of just slightly left of the centre-right Liberals.

i also think it would be great for him to have a seat in parliament as soon as possible, but that doesn’t mean he should just jump into the first byelection that gets called. a loss in the wrong seat would also be a bad look for a new leader.

i feel like people forget there are ways for a leader to get attention for a small party and even without a seat. elizabeth may used to make a big splash despite being the only elected member of the green party. an ndp mp can bring lewis into parliament so he can talk to media outside the chamber.

the media criticizes the ndp for not making a big dent in the discourse, yet that same media makes choices about whether to cover the ndp and what it’s saying. it’s kind of understandable not to give them much weight without a leader, but i’d hope that would change once there is a leader in place.

It absolutely won't. The only coverage Singh got when he first became leader was racists wondering if he was connected to Air India. But that's all the more reason to continue building popular education and mobilization outside (dying) mainstream channels. It's tough but necessary work.
