NEW: BC Conservatives brought in a priest to exorcise bad spirits before election night at Rocky Mountaineer Station. Same venue where Kerry-Lynne Findlay was crowned leader months ago, right before her disastrous run. Divine intervention clearly worked. #bcpoli #cdnpoli

Good thread with one addition: I think Eby defaulted to backroom politicking over making the public case. It wasn't just the disqualification but how he took on many files. While that can work as a Minister, it ultimately undermines a Premier who needs to be seen as open and accountable.

Stewart Prest@stewartprest.ca

One more BC thread. The NDP are going to spend a lot of time figuring out what went wrong. I think Eby never found his stride as premier, and the path to leadership was where things started to go wrong. Eby wasn't used to being the bad guy, but the disqualification of Appadurai did not go over well.

On that latter point, I'll be particularly interested to see if any of the candidates OneBC didn't run against make the cabinet cut: Heather Maahs, Kristina Loewen, Anna Kindy, Sharon Hartwell, Macklin McCall, Sheldon Clare, David Williams, and Lawrence Mok.

Using the data from @geekyjules.julessherred.com here bsky.app/profile/geek... I think we see the Greens pickup 6 seats From NDP: Oak Bay-Gordon Head Vancouver-South Granville Victoria-Beacon Hill Victoria-Swan Lake From Con: Saanich South Vancouver-Fraserview

The analysis I want to see (or will do if I have the time) is what would the results have been if all those NDP voters who stayed home had voted Green (riding by riding). I suspect still a Con majority but with a much larger Green caucus

Ie if the Greens "stole" the NDP vote, it would've meant 62-23-8 instead of 64-27-2 Still a massive Con majority

1. This wasn't a change of hearts election 2. The NDP could make a comeback with the right leader. 3. The Cons didn't win over BC, they shouldn't get complacent. 4. The Greens reversed their 2024 decline but also didn't break through or even return to 2017/2020 levels. Every party has work to do.

One Chart That Explains The 2026 B.C. Election

This looks to be the story in every riding the NDP lost. The Green vote was stagnant, more NDP voters stayed home than Cons.

It's a bitter irony that first past the post did in Eby's government when he was responsible for the referendum that could've delivered a more proportional voting system.

Very much this.

My first thought this morning? Victoria and Vancouver will need to work together to counter the cuts and setbacks that are coming. Harm reduction, non-market housing finance, housing density, etc, are all on the chopping block. @seanorr.bsky.social @lucymaloney.bsky.social Let’s hold the line.

It was actually pretty thoughtful of David Eby to schedule his self-immolation for the night I was already booked to see We Are Scientists. It meant I got to have an altogether pretty good night instead of stressing over the bloodshed live.

This is also true by percentage of seats won.

The BCNDP vote share may tick up with additional ballots counted but right now at 37%, it's the worst result for the party since 2001 and the second worst post-1970.

Seeing a lot of fear-mongering on my timeline tonight from trans folks and allies outside of B.C. Yes, this result is what it is. But this is not a “stockpile your HRT now” situation. And I think suggesting people do that is uneccessary and actively harmful to people who actually live here.

Looking like record-low voter turnout in B.C. tonight. With 97.3% of ballot boxes reporting, Elections B.C. reports a turnout of 46.63%.

BC Conservatives got 48.04% of the vote. Is that somehow the Greens' fault, too? Some people are genuinely allergic to holding the powerful responsible for their actions. Eby & the BC NDP did this. They pushed the province right, depressed turnout, didn't get rid of FPTP, and this was the result.

This post is unavailable.

For how bad David Eby's campaign has been, spare a second to appreciate how badly Dallas Brodie blew this. For the party of mavericks, they had a real shot to peel off a chunk of disaffected BC Cons who should be livid the old BC Liberals successfully couped their party.

OneBC could've been runner up in a bunch of Northern BC ridings, instead they're going to do worse than the BC Cons did when they were the fringe movement of cranks.

Already voted in advance (pretty much begrudgingly) so I can spend tomorrow at Camp with my family then a concert in the evening. Seems healthier than watching the nearly inevitable results at this point. I look forward to there being at least one BC political party leadership race to kick off 2027

The City of Vancouver released detailed election results today — and they show a story of Pete Fry becoming mayor by winning the north of the city. Fry's highest results were 80% at Britannia Community Centre and 73% at Mt. Pleasant Community Centre.

Liberals and Conservatives are rushing to pass Bill C-39 with little time to hear from Canadians and pass amendments. The bill gives cabinet ministers the power to declare entire regions of the country in which major projects can ignore virtually every environmental protection.

Unbelievable. We need to demand so much more from our government. This is basic data that was previously available. You don't just scrub the record clean because there's an investigation going on.

This is a publicly funded government agency refusing to share weather warnings and their own public warnings with a journalist at Global News, one of the larger mainstream news outlets in Canada. I really want you to sit with the bare facts of that.

The audacity of taking an oath of allegiance to the people in a democracy.

Today's terrifying realization is that there's a nonzero chance that if the BC Conservatives form government that their members refuse to support Doerkson as permanent leader and then go on to re-elect Kerry-Lynne Finally.

Like I put this very low on the list. I think she pissed off so many different factions that she wouldn't have a similar path back. But it's also not impossible.

Humanist chaplain @gregmepstein.bsky.social reminds us that AI is a quasi-religious story with heaven and hell, all-powerful beings and vulnerable humans, and the people selling it are trying to con us into giving up our power. But our community can fight back, together. Interfaith alliance crucial.

The Kennedy Stewart - Ken Sim era of Vancouver marks the first time Vancouver has dumped a mayor and their party from office twice in a row. In 1946-50, the city did go through 3 (or 4 if we count an interim) mayors in 4 years, but two of them died in office and all were NPA.

Alberta got played. With 82% counted, over 1.8m ballots have been counted on the separation question. Fewer on the other questions but numbers are ticking up. Turnout likely >75%. Smith is going to use this result to justify implementing the racist policies and dismantling healthcare.

Ian Bushfield@bushfield.ca

My honest take is Albertans should boycott all the referenda questions this fall. BCers did it in 2001 when Gordon Campbell tried to get a popular override for treaty rights.

Sorry, Max. Not likely to happen anytime soon: "The prime minister made clear that he views Alberta’s concerns as “issues,” not grievances." (Per The Toronto Star)

Max Fawcett@maxfawcett.bsky.social

The separatists are going to lose today’s vote. But if Alberta’s political class doesn’t stop feeding and inflaming their bottomless sense of grievance and victimhood, we’ll all end up losing in the end. #abpoli www.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/19/o...

This is the stupidest day in Alberta history, a record that will be broken by every subsequent day in Alberta history.

Oh, you want to open the constitution to appease Alberta kooks? I have some ideas for changes too. And I am not a kook. www.thestar.com/politics/fed...

Remember when Conservatives mocked Justin Trudeau for saying the budget will balance itself through economic growth? Apparently the BC Cons have come around to the idea

It's truly embarrassing that the Conservatives and Greens can both drop 70+ page platforms for a smap election where the BCNDP offer a few bullets on their website.

The Conservatives say a lot more about education than the NDP's silence. It's all bad but it's something. The Conservatives also promise to expand childcare (largely to fund private operators) while again the NDP is silent. WHY ARE WE HERE
