gas prices 🌎👩‍🚀🔫🧑‍🚀

METLIFE: “.. A larger share of households, roughly 42% of them, reported that their financial situation was somewhat or significantly worse than it was one year ago.” (NY Fed data:)

Consumers are *really* bad at expressing their economic well-being, it's basically just whatever pump prices are. Which is why maximizing EV share of the vehicle fleet is so important for breaking the carbon political economy in the US. Any other solution is doomed.

You mean gas price deflation specifically (as a headwind to EV / long term fix) or macro input-driven deflation or both? I think generally we want the future supply surplus (if it ever happens…) to pass back to consumers (or to public via taxation)

it is and frankly Biden failed there. He should have let in CHEAP CHINESE EVs, if he was really serious. I know he kinda tried, but only by protecting American car companies, and they suck. And what did this "protecting American workers and companies" even get him and the Dems?

My eye-opening moment remains when, on a jury, I learned the mother of the victim lived in Euclid and worked in Westlake. I Google mapped it out, its 24 miles one way. Thirty minutes by car. An hour and a half by transit.

It really seems like it boils down to 1. What’s the price of gas 2. What’s the price of groceries 3. What’s the price of rent and then an extremely distant 4th for quite literally all other expenses combined, just because those three in order are the regular and visible purchases.

Makes sense. Daily, weekly, monthly, and “on occasion”. I don’t buy gas every day but there’s two gas stations outside my work, thirteen on my commute, and one outside my apartment, and they all have the price of gas on a huge sign.

"Ugh we need to move people away from cars, how DARE you advocate anything other than biking and mass transit" Meanwhile, in reality...

...why not hang them from a truck? I assure you EV pickups can be lifted and there are a wide range of models available.

We can have both? Example after example show that when offered high quality trains and transit, people will ride it. And a recent study found that we need to not only convert to EVs but also cut VMT by 25% to reach climate goals.

That's so interesting. I'd expect the actual pain from food at home is more. Wonder if the diff is price at pump is something people interact with more often (#/week) and the price being so noticeable on boards. Your point of it being seen in a monthly electric payment would be interesting to see.

Glad we bought they Hyundai Hybrids last year. Have saved a lot of money. Filling up post Iran war went from $28 to $44. Mostly annoying how dumb everything is.

In the long term, you are correct. But, in the short term, this is REALLY bad for Trump. His base consumes more fuel, and especially more diesel, than average. In an ironic twist, the carbon political economy may save democracy.

"Priming the Pump" would be a great scholarly paper title about how folks see gas prices every day (and it's the only number like this) and it affects attitudes about the economy. It may actually already exist
